Frankenmuth combines the history of German settlement with opportunities to explore the town, the Cass River, and local events. When choosing a destination, you can distinguish among activities by their focus: historical insights, river experiences, outdoor activities, or cultural events. Some take you to exhibitions, others to historical markers in town or onto the river. There is also a downtown festival and a tasting evening at several participating venues.
Experience History in Different Places
The Frankenmuth Historical Association presents nine permanent galleries about the first 15 German settlers who settled Frankenmuth in 1845. A different perspective is offered by the authentic Wolkensdoerfer Log House, dating from the 1850s: visitors can enter the house and learn how families lived in the 19th century. The time periods covered are specific: the galleries cover the 1845 settlement, while the Log House offers insights into 19th-century family life.
The Frankenmuth Historical Museum offers an interactive tour through local history. The self-guided Historical Walking Tour leads to historical markers around town that tell stories from the past. St. Lorenz, Frankenmuth’s founding church, is also open to visitors. Alongside museum offerings, the historical attractions therefore include a self-guided tour and a church that visitors can explore.
On the Cass River: Cruise or Kayak
Experiences on the Cass River differ in format. The Bavarian Belle Riverboat, which holds 150 passengers, offers narrated cruises on the river in Frankenmuth. Frankenmuth Kayak Adventures rents sit-in and sit-on-top kayaks for paddling on the Cass River. This gives you two distinct ways to experience the river: a narrated cruise or paddling on your own. The Cass River is also officially designated as a Pure Michigan Trail.
There is also a specific route connection for cyclists: U.S. Bike Route 20 passes through Frankenmuth. This makes the route a separate outdoor activity option alongside the offerings on the Cass River. Since route conditions can change, check the latest route status before setting out on a specific ride.
Events and Active Activities
The Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival features German cuisine, dancing, and music in the downtown area. Wein & Stein offers a different experience: this evening event includes beer, wine, and spirits tastings, as well as appetizers at several participating venues. The formats therefore differ: one is a downtown festival, while the other is a tasting evening that takes place at multiple venues. If you are traveling specifically for either event, check the dates for your travel period.
The Frankenmuth Aerial Park combines a high ropes course with a zipline and offers family entertainment. The PedAle Trolley takes a different approach: the pedal-powered vehicle has 16 seats and offers various two-hour tours in Frankenmuth. The two-hour duration gives you a specific time frame for this activity.
