Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge spans 10,000 acres and is especially important for migratory waterfowl: it is designated an Important Bird Area and considered globally significant for these birds. The refuge is in Saginaw County, Michigan. More than 12 miles of public trails showcase the area’s distinctive features and offer a way to explore the landscape on foot.

When visiting, be sure to consider access conditions: seasonal flooding and closures during hunting season may affect trails. Check in advance whether the trails you plan to use are accessible. You can also explore the refuge by water; its waterways offer opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. Boating is subject to the refuge’s rules.

Trails, Forest, and Water

Trail distances offer a concrete point of reference for different natural areas. The refuge has more than 12 miles of public trails. Price Nature Center offers nearly three miles of hiking trails across 199 acres. Ringwood Forest covers 160 acres and contains some of Michigan’s oldest forest plantations. This makes it easy to distinguish between extensive refuge trails, a shorter network of hiking paths, and a landscape described as a forest.

Another route follows the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail. It covers 9.55 miles of an abandoned railroad corridor in Saginaw County, running from Lumberjack Park in St. Charles to Stroebel Road in James Township. Its named endpoints and former railroad corridor give this route a character distinct from trails in natural areas.

The rivers also offer different activities. The 334-acre Saginaw River Headwaters Rec Area lies southwest of Saginaw and stretches along the Saginaw River. On the Tittabawassee River, Imerman Memorial Park offers shore fishing and a place to launch your own boat. At the refuge, canoeing and kayaking on the waterways take center stage. These differences can help you choose nature and water experiences based on your interests.

Gardens, History, and Culture

The Japanese Cultural Center’s Roji Garden showcases thoughtful design details, including a bamboo gate called Nakamon and a stepping-stone path across moss-covered ground. Another tradition there is Chanoyu, the traditional tea ceremony. It takes place on Saturdays from April through October and on the second Saturday of each month from November through March, weather permitting. Tea and tours are available without a reservation.

The Castle Museum offers a broad look at the history of Saginaw County, covering far more than a single subject: the museum houses more than 150,000 artifacts from the county, displayed in the museum annex and the historic 1898 Castle Museum building. Saginaw’s lumber industry is represented through an extensive collection of historical images, tools, equipment, lumber signs, and other artifacts.

The Frankenmuth Historical Museum dedicates nine permanent galleries to the history of Frankenmuth’s first German settlers and the Franconian colonies. The Frankenmuth Historical Association also offers a tour of significant places and institutions in Frankenmuth. The Michigan Heroes Museum focuses on a different aspect of history: it honors the personal contributions of Michigan residents to U.S. military and space programs.

Discoveries for Different Interests

The Saginaw Children’s Zoo features a miniature train and a hand-carved carousel among its attractions. The carousel is described as the only one of its kind in the region. At the Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum, the Insides Out gallery focuses on the human body: children can examine and explore how its systems and parts are interconnected. The Aunt Sugar’s Farm & Uncle Pickle’s Barn gallery explores the farm-to-table journey. Through role-play, children take on the roles of farmers, market vendors, and cooks.

There’s also a hands-on culinary experience: at Bavarian Inn Bakery, you can shape pretzels with an advance reservation. Alongside nature trails and collections, this offers a specific activity centered on local food culture.
