Biddeford brings together textile-industry history, theater, walking trails, and three public ocean beaches. When choosing a hotel in Biddeford, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: are the historic mills and cultural offerings most important, or would you mainly like to include trails and the coast?

Mills and City History

The Biddeford Mills Museum offers tours of historic textile mill buildings. The tour includes a visit to underground canals dating from 1837. The Saco River supplied the mills with power through these canals, offering a concrete glimpse into the city’s industrial history. Check in advance whether a tour is available on your travel dates.

The Biddeford Museum in the Streets offers a different way to learn about history: the project includes 30 signs in English and French. Free historical walking tours are also available, showcasing Biddeford’s heritage and culture. The signs and tours give the city’s history space without limiting a visit to the mill complexes alone.

Theater and Cultural Program

The City Theater is another place to experience culture in Biddeford. City Theater Associates produces five community theater productions each year. The City Theater’s annual season runs from October through August and includes musicals and plays. The theater also hosts concerts, films, musicals, plays, and performing arts events throughout the year. The program therefore includes not only season productions but also other types of events across the year.

Trails in the Park and Through the Mill Campus

Outdoor trails vary in length and use. Clifford Park has an extensive trail network across more than 140 acres. It is used for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The RiverWalk, by contrast, is a short trail through the Pepperell Mill Campus and the surrounding area. Biddeford therefore offers both a larger trail network for a range of activities and a short route through the mill campus area.

For a longer route, consider the Eastern Trail’s more than six-mile off-road section. It is flat, easy, and scenic, and connects Biddeford, Arundel, and Kennebunk. One access point in Biddeford is at the Southern Maine Medical Center parking lot. Since access information can change, check it again before your trip.

Beaches and Coastal Access

Biddeford has three public ocean beaches. Another distinctive coastal spot is the East Point Audubon Sanctuary at the far end of Biddeford Pool, on Fletcher Neck. The sanctuary covers 27 acres; a short trail along the edge of the headland offers rare public access to this stretch of the Maine coast. Check trail conditions and notices of temporary closures before visiting.
