Discover York through its transitions between coast, marshland and culture. Trails pass through orchards and marshes to the water; protected salt marshes, historic buildings and art are also at the heart of the region. When planning a trip, you can prioritize these different themes according to your interests, rather than reducing York to a single coastal view.

Nature and Coastal Trails

The Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region covers more than 10,000 acres. The Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1966 to protect valuable salt marshes and estuaries for migratory birds. It stretches along 50 miles of coastline in York and Cumberland counties and includes eleven units between Kittery and Cape Elizabeth.

Trails in the refuge vary in length and character. The Carson Trail is about one mile long, mostly flat, and offers views of salt marshes. The Cutts Island Trail has 1.8 miles of easy trails over higher terrain, also with views of salt marshes. Before visiting, check trail conditions and access rules for the Carson Trail; conditions and parking availability at the Cutts Island Trail may change.

At Wells Reserve at Laudholm, the Barrier Beach Trail passes through an orchard and marshland on its way to Laudholm Beach. Visitors can explore tide pools there; the tides affect walking on the beach. Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a National Estuarine Research Reserve, and its headquarters are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Marginal Way offers a different kind of trail: this paved cliffside path is 1.25 miles long and runs from Shore Road to Perkins Cove. Along the way, it offers views of the sea, beach and natural rock formations. At Fort Foster Park in Kittery, the 88-acre destination combines a waterfront setting with a historic focus, three beaches and nearly two miles of trails. Ferry Beach State Park in Saco offers wide views of white-sand beaches between the Saco River and Pine Point, as well as nature trails.

The broader Maine Beaches tourism region features more than 30 miles of beaches. Possible activities include sunbathing, swimming, bodysurfing, beach walks and kite flying. Nubble Light, officially called Cape Neddick Light Station, opened in 1879 on a small rocky island off York.

History, Art and Events

Historic sites offer different ways to explore the past. The Old Gaol Museum in York is a National Historic Landmark. York Corner Schoolhouse is among New England’s earliest surviving 18th-century schoolhouses. In Kennebunk, the Brick Store Museum focuses on local history and art; it was founded in 1936 in a former brick store.

In Biddeford, the historic textile mills offer another way to explore local history: the Biddeford Mills Museum runs walking tours of the mill buildings. City Theater is a year-round performing arts center. The Biddeford ArtWalk is a self-guided tour; visits to open studios and hands-on workshops may be part of it. Since event schedules can change, check the dates in advance.

Biddeford’s two major annual festivals also bring different seasonal highlights: WinterFest takes place in February, and River Jam in August. If either festival fits your travel plans, check the specific event dates.

At the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, art and architecture meet. Visitors can explore the three-acre sculpture park with its landscaped gardens, the Mid-Century Modern building designed by Charles Worley, and changing exhibitions. The museum is dedicated to modern and contemporary art, adding a distinct cultural focus to the region’s historic attractions.

When choosing a hotel in York, you can shape your trip around the interests that appeal to you most: coastal trails and marshlands, historic sites, art or events. The specific differences in trail lengths, surfaces and seasonal event dates can help you decide which experiences to prioritize.
