Between Mountain Forest and River

The Bigelow Ecological Reserve encompasses more than 3,100 acres of subalpine spruce-fir forest and stretches from Flagstaff Lake to West Peak across an elevation range of more than 3,000 feet. These two figures show different aspects of the protected area: its vertical range and its extensive forest cover. Grand Falls also makes a striking mark on the landscape: the impressive waterfall is about 40 feet high and 120 feet wide. In The Forks, the Dead River and the Kennebec River meet.

You can also experience the river landscape on foot. The Weston Woods & Waters Trail leads walkers from the center of Madison along the Kennebec River through forests and fields. The area includes about 2.5 miles of riverfront. Along the way are the remains of the old Weston family cemetery, cellar holes and other historic relics. Here, traces of nature and history aren’t separate; you encounter them along the same trail.

Trails with Different Profiles

If you’re looking for a longer route through mountain scenery, the Appalachian Trail offers a clear measure: it runs for 17.6 miles across the seven peaks of the Bigelow Mountain Range. The Historic Pines Trail is on a different scale. It’s about one mile long, follows a ridge along the Kennebec River and provides access to the Father Rasle Monument. Its historical context includes Wabanaki history, English settlement and Colonel Benedict Arnold’s Wilderness March to Québec. The different distance figures help you compare route lengths, but don’t indicate how long each hike will take.

The Esker Trail is a flat, unmaintained, 4.0-mile forest singletrack. It follows an old transportation road dating from the 1960s. Trail conditions can change, so check current conditions before your trip. The Skowhegan River Trail/DeBe Park offers a different type of trail: a paved, ADA-compliant path through the forest with views of the Kennebec River Gorge.

Coburn Woods has more than four miles of mountain biking singletrack. Coburn Woods and Taylor Field also offer opportunities for hiking, biking and snowshoeing. The Skowhegan River’s Edge Bike Park adds a short, machine-built, lollipop-shaped loop to the options. Advanced riders can test their skills on optional boardwalks and bridges.

Winter Trails and Paddling Perspectives

Winter options also vary by location and activity. The trails to Grand Falls Hut are groomed for winter hiking, snowshoeing, fat biking and Nordic walking or cross-country skiing. The hut is accessible year-round via hiking trails; check access information again before traveling. The Yankee Woodlot trails are suitable for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter and are open to all non-motorized users.

For a broader regional perspective, the Upper Kennebec region also offers paddling routes. A section of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail passes through the region via the Spencer Stream watershed and the Moose River; water levels and access conditions vary. The Moose River Bow Trip is a 34-mile loop along the Moose River and across Attean Pond and Holeb Pond. If you’re considering these trips, factor changing water levels and access conditions into your plans.

History, Culture and Local Events

Several places tell stories of the past through very different kinds of evidence. The Skowhegan History House Museum & Research Center is a Greek Revival building constructed in 1839. Its collection includes antiques, furnishings and everyday items from Skowhegan dating to the mid-19th century. Its ornamental gardens include historic heirloom plants that were available to New England gardeners in the mid-19th century. The Margaret Chase Smith Library features a permanent timeline exhibit about her life and career from 1897 to 1995.

The Norridgewock Historical Society’s collection includes Indigenous artifacts, early 20th-century medicine, as well as maps, books, postcards and newspapers. Skowhegan Island offers a different historical perspective: it served as an east-west crossing point for Indigenous peoples. Together, these themes offer different ways to explore history through collections, buildings, gardens and the significance of a place.

In Skowhegan, the annual Maple Festival pairs maple recipes with a cooking contest, a maple dinner, children’s activities and maple ice cream. The Skowhegan State Fair also has a long history: it has been held without interruption since 1818. Its program includes performances, competitions, livestock shows, exhibits and food offerings; individual events may change. Check dates and the program before planning your visit around them. Oak Pond Brewery offers short tours on request, led by brewers Nancy Chandler or her son Adam. Check in advance whether a tour is available on your chosen date.

Beyond the individual places, Somerset County offers opportunities for whitewater rafting and a cultural trail highlighting works by artists Bernard Langely and Barry Norling. The options range from river and forest trails to cultural history and events, with a wide variety of themes to consider as you plan your trip.
