In Sagadahoc County, historic sites and waterscapes tell stories about a wide range of topics. Days Ferry developed around a crossing of the Kennebec River; in Bath, a visitor center sits along its waterfront. On the coast, in protected areas and at historic sites, you’ll encounter more stories—from architecture and maritime history to wetlands and Atlantic surf.

Architecture and Local History

The Topsham Historic District comprises 58 buildings. Their architectural styles span about 150 years, from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century. The district thus reflects a long period of time rather than focusing on just one architectural style.

Days Ferry is an intact rural village dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its development was tied to a crossing of the Kennebec River. In Bath, the Washington Park Historic District tells a different part of the town’s history: its local significance lies in its connection to housing for defense workers during World War I. The Chocolate Church Arts Center building was completed in 1847 as the Central Church of Bath. The historic connections here therefore range from a village that grew around a river crossing to a building with a clearly stated original purpose.

Bath on the Kennebec: Shipbuilding and Oysters

The Maine’s First Ship visitor center is located in the historic Bath Freight Shed along the Kennebec River waterfront. The Maine Maritime Museum is also in Bath, on a 20-acre site by the river. These different details help distinguish two places with different functions: the visitor center here, the museum grounds there.

The museum also offers a seasonal oyster-tasting cruise. It covers oyster farming, harvesting and marketing. So the topic goes beyond tasting to include the different stages through which oysters become a marketable product. If you plan to take the cruise, check the current schedule in advance; the offering is seasonal.

Coast, Fort and Lighthouses

Popham Beach State Park borders the south side of the mouth of the Kennebec River and is one of Maine’s rare geological landforms. The Atlantic surf draws swimmers and surfers. This makes the river mouth a coastal landscape with a different geological classification and recreational appeal from the historic sites along the Kennebec.

Fort Baldwin originally consisted of three gun batteries: Cogan, Hardman and Hawley. These three names are part of the fort’s historical description. At Squirrel Point Light, a roughly 2/3-mile hiking trail leads to the lighthouse. The grounds are open to the public, but the buildings are not open to visitors. Check the latest visitor information before setting out. Access to Doubling Point Light is via a single-lane private road with no place to turn around—a key access condition to keep in mind when planning your visit.

Protected Areas and Different Waterscapes

At Mill Pond Preserve, trails pass through salt marshes, oak-pine forests, woodlands with vernal pools, and tidal wetlands along the rocky banks of the Back River. The trails offer a way to experience the range of habitats described here. Morse Pond Preserve offers a different focus: the 280-acre protected area preserves important wetland habitats, and a hiking trail leads to the shore of Morse Pond.

Bald Head Preserve is also defined by its location between two rivers: it includes land that separates the Kennebec River from the Back River. The differences among the protected areas lie in their specific landscape features—from trails through multiple habitats, to a path leading to a pond shore, to land between two rivers. Nature enthusiasts will find different aspects of wetlands and river landscapes here; those interested in local history can look to the buildings and historical connections.
