Twelve miles of riverfront and 2,675 acres: Androscoggin Riverlands State Park brings together two concrete measures. It is part of the larger Androscoggin Greenway and the Androscoggin River Water Trail. Androscoggin County is part of the Maine's Lakes & Mountains region.

River, Lake, and Trails

Range Pond State Park lies on the northeastern shore of Lower Range Pond and includes a swimming area with a sandy beach. In the northwest, an old carriage road runs alongside the former railroad bed to the historic Poland Railroad Station. Along a trail in the southeast, signs point out natural features. Big Falls Preserve offers a loop trail through a 40-acre preserve with a small wading pool and a scenic waterfall.

In the western part of Auburn, wooded Mount Apatite Park covers 325 acres. Its approximately four miles of trails are intended for non-motorized activities such as hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Which seasonal activities are possible may vary depending on conditions. Hobbyists may search the mine tailings for pieces of apatite, tourmaline, and quartz under special rules; check the current collecting rules before your trip.

The trail descriptions also distinguish between the types of offerings: Mount Apatite lists about four miles of trails for several non-motorized activities; Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary in Lewiston, by contrast, has a 4.4-mile route rated moderate. Visitors can explore old farm foundations and fire pits, fields, and wildlife along the route. This comparison helps distinguish a trail network with several types of use from a specifically rated route.

History and Culture Along the River and in the City

The Riverwalk in Auburn connects to Lewiston via the John T. Jenkins Memorial Pedestrian Bridge and continues to Simard-Payne Park. The L-A River History Trail connects both sides of the Androscoggin River with 30 historical markers; the texts are written in English and French. This makes it possible to discover the river's history through both its stops and its bilingual explanations.

In downtown Lewiston, Maine MILL, a history and culture museum, focuses on the history of labor and industrial ingenuity. One exhibition there is organized around four interconnected themes: community, labor, innovation, and Maine Today. The Knight House of the Androscoggin Historical Society dates to 1796. A small adjoining shoe shop displays tools and equipment that show how some Auburn residents earned their living at the time.

The Bates College Museum of Art welcomes the public to visit its exhibitions for free. Exhibitions and visitor arrangements may change; check them before your trip. This lets you include the museum visit among your cultural discoveries without equating it with the historic sites along the river.

Local Life Throughout the Year

The Lewiston Farmers' Market in the Lewiston-Auburn area is a year-round market where visitors can buy local food and goods. Vendors' seasonal offerings may vary: the market takes place all year, while the selection may also be shaped by the season.
