Dexter is located in a small valley along Route 7. Visitors can pursue a range of interests here: architecture and community history, golf, a public beach on Little Lake Wassookeag, as well as theater and a festival. If you are looking for accommodation in Dexter, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.

Architecture and Local History

Dexter Universalist Church is considered one of Thomas W. Silloway’s finest architectural works. For architecture enthusiasts, it is a clearly identified point of interest. The Dexter Historical Society maintains four museum buildings: the Abbott Museum & Gift Shop, the Grist Mill Museum, the Millers House, and the one-room Carr Schoolhouse. The term “one-room” refers to a school with one classroom. The Carr Schoolhouse complements the other museum buildings with a connection to school history; alongside milling operations and technical equipment, the collection also includes a school building.

At the Grist Mill Museum, permanent and changing exhibits explore different periods of community life during the grain mill’s operation. Parts of the mill are also still on display, including wheels, belts, elevators, and a grinding machine. Important for planning: not all parts of the mill are wheelchair accessible.

The Abbott Museum offers research and genealogical services. The two historical focuses therefore differ: the Grist Mill Museum centers on milling operations, community life, and preserved technology, while the Abbott Museum adds research and genealogy.

Golf and Little Lake Wassookeag

Dexter has a municipal nine-hole golf course and a driving range. This means there are two different golf options: the nine-hole course and the separate range. Little Lake Wassookeag has a public beach and a public boat launch. The golf course and lakeside facilities cater to different recreational interests. The two public facilities at Little Lake Wassookeag serve different purposes: a boat launch is for putting a boat in the water, while a beach is for spending time by the shore. So if you are including the lake in your plans, the right place to go depends on whether you intend to launch a boat or spend time by the shore.

Theater and Festival

Wayside Theatre is an open theater that welcomes everyone without discrimination.

The Maine Red Hot Dog Festival is a fundraising event organized by the Dexter Development Association (DDA), whose goal is to bring many people to town. The festival features food, arts and crafts, other vendors, competitions, children’s games, and live entertainment.
