Range Pond State Park offers a sandy beach swimming area and two easy trails with different characteristics. Museums and historic buildings offer more to explore during a stay in Poland, Maine: the former bottling plant, the history of the Maine State Building and the All Souls Chapel’s current use.

Nature at Range Pond

The Old Camp Trail is two miles long, easy, and runs along the shore of Range Pond. It can be used for hiking and snowshoeing. The Railbed Trail is one mile long and also easy. Its packed gravel surface and interpretive signs about the park’s natural features give it a different character.

In a direct comparison, the Old Camp Trail is twice as long as the Railbed Trail. But the choice is not just about trail length: hiking and snowshoeing are mentioned for the Old Camp Trail, while the Railbed Trail has its own focus, with its gravel surface and interpretive signs. Together with the swimming area, the state park offers different ways to enjoy the outdoors during a stay.

Museums and Tours

The Poland Spring Bottling Museum was established after the original bottling plant and spring house were restored and converted into a museum open to the public. New exhibits introduced in 2021 include, in particular, a locomotive and a child-friendly model of a bottling plant. Since individual displays may change, check which exhibits are currently on view before visiting.

The Poland Spring Museums offer guided, audio-guided and self-guided tours. This gives you several ways to explore: a guided tour, an audio tour or a self-guided tour. If a particular format matters to your plans, check in advance what is available on the day of your visit.

Buildings and Local History

The Maine State Building was constructed in 1893 for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. On July 1, 1895, it was dedicated as a library and art gallery as part of the Town of Poland’s centennial celebration. The two dates mark different stages in its history: its construction for the exposition and its later dedication as a library and gallery.

All Souls Chapel opened in 1912 as an interfaith place of worship for Catholics and Protestants. Today, it is a venue for weddings, memorial services, baptisms, concerts and other important events. The Poland Spring Historic District is a historically significant resort complex, notable for its associations with health care and medicine, entertainment and recreation, and industry.

When choosing a hotel in Poland, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: nature at Range Pond State Park or museums and local history. The different trails, tours, exhibits and historic buildings offer concrete points of reference.
