Two adjacent chimneys give Fitchburg Furnace its distinctive profile. It is the only iron furnace of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. This striking structure offers a glimpse of Estill County, where historic landmarks, community culture, and landscapes come together to offer a variety of discoveries.

Historic Traces from Iron Furnaces to the Courthouse

Another historic landmark is Estill Steam Furnace: a stone-built chimney erected by Thomas Deye Owings in 1830. The historic Estill County Courthouse stands on Courthouse Square in Irvine, Kentucky. Stone from the county was used to build it, and local residents provided the labor. Estill Springs, meanwhile, operated as a spa from 1814 until the hotel burned down in 1924. These landmarks tell different chapters of the county’s history, from the iron furnace to the courthouse to the former spa.

The Quilt Trail and Community Culture

The Estill County Quilt Trail developed into a countywide community project: residents helped choose both the quilt patterns and the barn locations. Visitors can seek out local heritage along rural highways and scenic byways. Many locations are on private property. Unless otherwise indicated at a particular location, view the designs from public roads and follow the visitor guidance posted on site.

The annual Mountain Mushroom Festival celebrates Appalachian culture with themes such as morel mushrooms, Kentucky agate, arts and crafts, Daniel Boone National Forest, the Kentucky River, and the mountains. The program includes exhibits, hands-on activities and demonstrations, as well as stages featuring storytelling and culinary programs. The festival offers a free weekend of activities and entertainment. Dates may vary and program details may change; if you are planning your trip around it, check the dates for that year.

The Ravenna Railroad Festival offers a different focus: it celebrates Ravenna’s railroad heritage and includes railroad exhibits and miniature train rides. The festival themes therefore range from a broad spectrum of Appalachian culture to a clear focus on railroad history.

Outings Between the River and the Foothills

Estill County lies in the gently rolling foothills of the Appalachians, and the Kentucky River runs through the county. The county promotes scenic roads for outings by car, motorcycle, or bicycle. Lily Mountain Nature Preserve encompasses more than 500 acres of natural area. The ridge trail at Lily Mountain offers views of Rocky’s Roost. Here, different scales of scenery sit side by side: a large natural area and a named overlook along the ridge trail.

A tasting is also described as a possible part of a trip. A Lexington Herald-Leader report dated October 28, 2025, described how visitors could sample various moonshine products during a day visit to the distillery at Kentucky Mountain Moonshine in Irvine. Check before your visit to see whether tastings are currently offered.
