In the Cloverport Historic District, the Ohio River to the north and Clover Creek to the south mark its boundaries. This clear geographical enclosure leads to a history that reaches beyond the town.
Cloverport: River History and Historic Traces
Cloverport's historic resources were significant to the cultural development of Breckinridge County. The town was an important commercial and cultural center, as well as the county's river port. This makes it possible to look beyond the clearly defined historic district to Cloverport's role in the history of the entire county.
Joseph Holt adds an individual biography to this regional perspective. From 1862 to 1875, he served as Judge Advocate General of the United States Army; after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, he led the trial of the conspirators. Holt is buried alongside his parents and other relatives in the family cemetery at the site of the Joseph Holt Home. His story connects public office and a historic trial with local family history.
Art, Collections and Motorsports
River's Edge Art Gallery offers exhibition space and a classroom for presenting and creating visual art. This puts both the presentation and practice of visual art at the center.
Admission to the Cloverport Museum is free. Its opening hours are limited and seasonal; on Sundays, the museum is open from 2 to 4 p.m. Check the hours before your visit.
The Irvington Depot and Museum is housed in a former Louisville & Nashville Railroad station built in the 1920s. The museum houses historic artifacts from the local community. Here, the history of a former railway station meets objects from local life.
Motorsports are also part of the county's history: US 60 Dragway opened on July 31, 1964. Vehicles from 37 states competed in the track's first 1/8-mile Nationals. The opening date and the number of states represented give this chapter a specific timeframe and geographic scope.
Nature, Waterways and Getting Around
Breckinridge County Wildlife Education Park is a demonstration area for environmental education. Its focus is restoring native warm-season grasses. The park is open for passive recreation only, from sunrise to sunset; there are no public hiking trails. Avoid entering during active shooting events at the adjacent Sportsman Club.
Happy Jack's Winery is located on the shore of Rough River Lake in Breckinridge County. Together, these places show different connections to the landscape: the Wildlife Education Park focuses on environmental education and the restoration of native grasses, while Happy Jack's Winery is situated right on the lakeshore.
The three towns in Breckinridge County lie along US Highway 60. Breckinridge County Airport has a new terminal building and a 4,000-foot concrete runway. Confirm the facilities and operating status before traveling.
