Rail Trail and Hiking Trails
The first 25 miles of the Dawkins Line Rail Trail feature 24 trestle bridges and the 662-foot-long Gun Creek Tunnel. These structures give the route a distinctive character. The trail is 36 miles long overall, running from Hagerhill in Johnson County to Evanston in Breathitt County. It is open to hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. The Evanston section is accessible only from Breathitt County because the Tip Top Tunnel is not open. The structure details refer to the first 25 miles, while the 36-mile figure covers the entire trail—two different measures for planning your route.
A 0.9-mile hiking trail leads from the mouth of Boardinghouse Branch Hollow to a fire lookout tower on the hill, climbing 660 feet in elevation along the way. To understand the route, consider both its length and elevation gain: the distance describes the way to the destination, while the elevation gain adds information about the climb.
Landscapes Between River History and Forest
Panbowl Lake lies in the former channel of the Kentucky River, after the river was diverted in 1963. This sequence links the lake to a specific change in the river’s course and makes the difference between its former route and today’s landscape clear.
In southeastern Breathitt County, the Paul Van Booven Wildlife Management Area encompasses more than 2,000 acres of reclaimed surface-mining land and forests. Robinson Forest is part of the mixed mesophytic forest region and includes some of the least-disturbed watersheds in eastern Kentucky. The comparison highlights different features: reclamation and forest on one hand, forest type and largely undisturbed watersheds on the other.
Archaeology and Regional History
The archaeological Kragon Site covers approximately 3,500 square meters and offers insights into the customs, skills, and daily activities of the Fort Ancient people. Evidence of habitation during the Woodland and Fort Ancient periods spans from 1000 BC to AD 1200. The timeframe and insights into daily life offer two different perspectives on the site: its broad historical span and specific aspects of Fort Ancient life.
The Morris Fork Presbyterian Church and Community Center developed between 1927 and 1960 as the Presbyterian mission in Morris Fork grew. Honey production provides a different historical focus: in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Breathitt County led Kentucky in this field. Thus, the mission’s development in Morris Fork and the history of honey production across the county stand side by side. The Breathitt County Museum is also located in Jackson.
