A creek alongside walking trails, four museum buildings with artifacts from the county’s early history, and a monument at the geographic center of the contiguous United States: Smith County offers several points of interest for a trip. Its cultural history and landscapes each have a distinct focus.

Historic Sites in Smith County

The Smith County Historical Museum comprises four buildings and an extensive collection of artifacts from the county’s early history. The Historic Homes Walking Tour offers a different perspective on the history of Smith Center: it includes 15 historic homes. The museum and walking tour offer different highlights—one a collection, the other historic homes in the townscape.

The Dutch Mill can be placed in historical context through several dates: it was built in 1883, and corn, Graham and wheat flour were processed there until 1920. In 1938, the mill was moved to its current location. The Home on the Range Cabin was built in 1875 and was the home of Dr. Brewster Higley. Its visitor site includes a creek and walking trails. Since trail conditions can change, check them before going for a walk.

The song “Home on the Range” has a special connection to Kansas: it was designated the official state song on June 30, 1947. The Athol Community Hall adds a distinctive building detail to the historic sites. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 21, 2025. Its ground floor is a basketball court with the original four-layer maple floor.

Getting Around Smith Center and Lebanon

The permanent monument at the geographic center of the contiguous United States in Lebanon was unveiled on June 29, 1941. It is one mile north of Lebanon, Kansas, and one mile west on Highway 191. The marker at the site of the Battle of Beaver Creek is west of Smith Center on K-36. After turning onto Road M, it is about three-quarters of a mile south, on the west side of the road, on a small rise.

The Smith Center Municipal Golf Course also has a specific location: it is 4.3 miles south of Smith Center on Highway 281. Wagner Park offers a place for picnics and has playground equipment.

Landscapes and Activities

Smith County has open spaces, rolling hills with extensive farmland and pastureland, and numerous wooded creek bottoms. Fishing ponds and impressive sunsets are also among its landscape features. The Solomon River runs through the county’s southwestern corner. Wildlife includes deer and turkeys; elk are occasional visitors.

The hills and wooded bottoms offer opportunities for hiking, hunting and fishing, provided the landowners involved give permission. This condition is part of the planning: these activities require permission from the respective owners. If you want to focus on nature and outdoor activities, these options offer a different experience from the historic sites in Smith Center, Lebanon and Athol.

Planning and Finding a Place to Stay

SC Public Transportation Community Connection is operated by the City of Smith Center and serves visitors and residents throughout the county. The service also travels along a scenic route to Home on the Range. If you plan to use the service during your trip, confirm transportation options and arrangements in advance.

When looking for a vacation rental in Smith County, it helps to set a clear priority: do you want to focus on historic sites and buildings, or on walking trails and landscapes? The Dutch Mill and the cabin reflect different historical periods, while the details about the river, hills and creek bottoms turn the focus to the county as a natural landscape. This lets you tailor your accommodation search to what actually matters for your trip.
