At the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum, Muriel takes center stage: the last surviving Lockheed Electra 10-E aircraft in the world. It gives Atchison’s aviation history a tangible focal point. But discovery goes beyond the aircraft: Amelia Earhart’s birthplace, historic sites, and the landscape of Atchison County also reveal different sides of the destination.

Amelia Earhart’s Life Story in Atchison

The Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum preserves the Victorian house where Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897. She lived there at intervals until eighth grade. Seeing her birthplace adds another chapter of her story to a visit to the Hangar Museum: here, the focus is on her early years, while there, an aircraft named Muriel takes center stage. The two museums thus explore different points of connection to Earhart’s life.

History in Different Places

The events of 1804 also give the area a historical connection. On July 3, the Lewis and Clark Expedition was in the area that later became Atchison County. The following day, the Corps of Discovery celebrated the first Independence Day west of the Mississippi near Atchison. The two dates mark different stages: one places the later county at the center of events, while the other marks the celebration near Atchison.

The Atchison County Historical Society Museum preserves military history artifacts and equipment spanning a long period, from the American Revolution through World War II. The museum is housed in the Santa Fe Freight Depot Museum, built in 1880. The Farmington Christian Church in Atchison County offers another historical perspective. Its exhibits cover the Bleeding Kansas era and Pardee Butler’s contribution to the early Free-State movement in Kansas. Those interested in the state’s history will find subjects here from different periods of its past.

The area’s history also includes a reconstruction of a Kanza Indian lodge on the banks of Independence Creek. It represents a typical dwelling for a family unit. The Independence Creek Lewis & Clark Historic Site is also located in Atchison County; the lodge and the named historic site offer distinct points of connection.

Riverbanks, Hills, and Open Valleys

Atchison County is part of Kansas’s Glacial Hills region. Along the Missouri River, Benedictine Bottoms features riverside woodlands, native grasslands, seasonally flooded wetlands, feeding areas, and scour depressions. Woodlands, grasslands, and water-shaped areas sit side by side, giving the landscape a variety of features.

The Atchison State Fishing Lake offers a different setting: it lies among wooded, rounded hills with oak-hickory forests and broad, cultivated valleys. The contrast between wooded heights and open valleys helps put the area’s landscape in context beyond individual viewpoints.

At Riverfront Park in Atchison, views turn to the Missouri River. Walking paths, picnic areas, and historic markers bring together river views with opportunities to walk and linger. If you rely on a particular park facility, check its current status in advance: amenities can change.

Guided Tours and Getting Your Bearings

The Historic Trolley Tours offer bookable, 90-minute guided rides through Atchison’s historic neighborhoods. Check availability for your preferred date. The Amelia Earhart Festival is also part of the annual event calendar and celebrates aviation and adventure. Its 29th edition took place in Atchison on July 17 and 18, 2026.

For getting your bearings on the road, the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway follows K-7 north to Atchison and Troy. The Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum can also be reached directly by plane via Amelia Earhart Memorial Airport in Atchison. Since air services can change, check current flight options before planning to use this access.
