In Winnebago County, reasons to visit range from a leisurely river trip to a floating sphagnum bog, technical collections, and local events. So when planning, first consider whether nature experiences, history, or a specific festival date will shape your stay.

River Trips, Fishing, and Natural Areas

The Winnebago County Conservation Board manages more than 3,500 acres of parks, wilderness areas, and recreation areas throughout the county. A leisurely river trip is possible on the Winnebago River Water Trail. Launch sites are available at Dahle Park, in the Lande River Conservation Area, and in the Ambroson Recreation Area. These three locations offer specific starting points for a river trip, while Lake Catherine in Thorpe Park provides a different water activity: fishing is possible there year-round in a peaceful setting.

Pilot Knob State Park: Bog, Trails, and Lake

Pilot Knob State Park is home to Deadman's Lake, a 4-acre floating sphagnum bog that is unique in Iowa. The park also has a 15-acre lake with largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish. The different bodies of water give the natural area two distinct features: an unusual bog and a lake with specifically named fish species.

The park offers a variety of trails, including five miles for horseback riding. History is also part of the site: the Observation Tower, dating from the Civilian Conservation Corps era, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Campers will find electrical hookups, modern showers and restrooms, and a dump station for RVs at the campground. Reservations are required for the campground.

Environmental Education and Special Observations

The Hanson Nature Center offers environmental education programs for school groups, community groups, and the general public. At the center, the Mae's Way Motus Tower can detect tagged birds flying within about 8 miles. This brings two distinct topics together: environmental education and the tracking of tagged birds.

Collections, Technology, and History

The Heritage Park of North Iowa in Forest City offers historical collections, rare exhibits, diverse displays, and active demonstrations. The Steam and Threshing Museum at Heritage Park in Forest City has about 30 steam engines and 40 threshing machines. Winnebago factory tours start at the Visitors Center in Forest City and are free.

In Lake Mills, the Lake Mills Area Historical Society maintains the Victorian House & Gardens, built in 1901, as well as the Burnap Country School. Tours of both sites are available by appointment. These offerings differ from the collections and demonstrations in Forest City: the focus here is on two specific historic buildings and their tours.

Annual Events

The Winnebago County Fair takes place every year on the third weekend in July at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds in Thompson, Iowa. The program includes local vendors, livestock shows, and live entertainment. This gives you a clear seasonal reference point for planning; check the specific event dates before your trip.

Another event highlight is the annual July Jubilee in Lake Mills. It includes a wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres featuring wines from Lazy Acre Vineyard. Unlike the county fair, no specific event date is given here; the program details described still give a clear impression of the festival's culinary focus.
