Thirty-seven parks and miles of scenic trails give Marshall a strong connection to nature. The managed natural areas of Marshall County Conservation range from forests and prairies to wetlands, lakes and rivers. If you enjoy experiencing different landscapes outdoors, you’ll find more than just one kind of natural setting here, with areas ranging from floodplain forest and sand prairie to river landscapes.

Trails Between Landscapes and History

The Heart of Iowa Nature Trail includes a 33-mile section of the former Milwaukee Railroad between Melbourne and Slater and is part of the American Discovery Trail. Its former use as a railroad gives the trail a historical dimension. In Marshalltown, by contrast, the Linn Creek Recreational Trail is a paved, linear route that runs mainly along the levee beside Linn Creek and the Iowa River. The two descriptions emphasize different features: a former rail corridor on the one hand, and a trail that follows the river courses on the other.

Floodplain forest defines most of the landscape in Three Bridges Park, with limestone bluffs along its eastern section. The park also provides access to the Iowa River. Another detail with historical significance is the foundation of an early gristmill. Landscape, river and mill foundation come together here, offering visitors several points of interest.

Quarry Bridge also has historical significance as an early wagon crossing. Anyone interested in the history of everyday routes and crossings will find this offers a different perspective from the natural areas and trails.

Prairies, Forests and Wildlife Viewing

Marietta Sand Prairie is a 17-acre natural area featuring windblown sand deposits and sand prairie. Aeolian is the term for deposits transported by wind. In places, the sand is up to 36 feet deep, providing habitat for prairie plants that thrive in sandy conditions. The geological feature and plant life are closely connected here: the sand is not just a landscape feature, but also shapes the habitat.

The Iowa River Wildlife Area offers a different natural setting: it covers 485 acres along the Iowa River Greenbelt, with two-thirds forest and one-third grassland. Timmons Grove South is also part of the Iowa River Greenbelt, but is described as a 205-acre wooded recreation area. It has RV sites with 25- to 30-amp electrical hookups, as well as a boat ramp providing access to the Iowa River.

Sand Lake is an important resting and wintering area for wildlife. Bald eagles are often seen nearby; as with wildlife sightings generally, a specific sighting cannot be planned. The combination of a resting area and the possibility of seeing eagles makes this an especially interesting spot for anyone interested in the region’s wildlife.

By the Water and Under the Stars

Green Castle Recreation Area includes a 16-acre lake within a 116.5-acre area. In addition to its size, the astronomical observatory helps define the character of the site. A boat ramp provides access for canoes and kayaks; conditions may vary by season. Water access and an offering centered on the night sky are thus two distinct features of the same recreation area.

At Grimes Farm, trails lead through forests, wetlands, prairies and farmland. The Conservation Center has space for natural history exhibits. Regular public educational programs are also held there throughout the year. If you’re interested in a particular program, check the county calendar to find a suitable date.

Historic Sites and Art

Mormon Ridge Log Cabin is believed to have been built in 1856. On December 10, 1991, it was moved 300 feet to its current location. Organized groups can arrange an appointment for an open house; it’s best to confirm the arrangements before your visit. Quarry Bridge and the Log Cabin illustrate different aspects of regional history: an early wagon crossing and a historic building with a documented relocation.

Art is also part of the cultural landscape: the Fisher Art Collection brings together Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. The Fisher Art Museum is located in the Marshalltown Arts and Civic Center. Together with the historic sites, this look at art adds another possible focus to your trip planning alongside nature and trail experiences.
