More than a hundred years old, hand-carved and fully restored: the Logansport Cass County Dentzel Carousel brings history to life as a preserved carousel. It was created by Gustav A. Dentzel and is designated a National Historic Landmark. At the carousel, visitors can reach for the brass ring. Check operating dates and hours in advance if you plan to include this experience. The carousel offers a tangible way to explore the county’s cultural history—and is just one of several very different discoveries.
Water, Rocks and Trails
At France Park, a waterfall, a clear swimming lake and scenic cliffs shape the landscape. Swimming and scuba diving are possible in a long-closed quarry. Since the swimming area’s status may change seasonally or temporarily, check before your visit whether swimming will be possible on your chosen date. The park also offers 5 to 7 miles of hiking and biking trails.
For a longer route with a different layout, try the Panhandle Pathway: a 22-mile rail trail through Pulaski and Cass counties in Indiana. It follows the historic Pennsylvania Railroad Line, passing through farmland and wooded areas and crossing the Tippecanoe River. From Royal Center, you can follow the trail north to Winamac or south to France Park on foot or by bike. The park’s trails thus contrast with a longer, linear route and its varied landscapes.
Along the Wabash River: Nature and History
The Little Turtle Waterway offers a 1.8-mile trail along the Wabash River, with views of the water and its wildlife. The site also serves as an outdoor museum and tells the story of Logansport. Here, river views and a historical perspective on the city come together in one place. The Waterway also has a public access site maintained by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, where watercraft can reach the Wabash River.
Museums and Architectural History
The Long Home Museum is a residence in the Italianate style, originally built in 1853 for Dr. George Jerolaman. Its construction date, original purpose and style offer several historical points of reference. The Longcliff Museum is dedicated to the history of Logansport State Hospital and features artworks, artifacts, documents and exhibits. Visits to the Longcliff Museum are available by appointment only.
The Fiberglass Freaks’ Batman Museum offers a different cultural focus. Its collection includes hundreds of Batman toys, props and promotional materials. The exhibits cover different eras and portrayals of the character in television, films and comics; their presentation may change over time. Together with the Dentzel Carousel, the range spans everything from a historic amusement ride to a themed collection centered on a character from various media.
