Bear Lake County offers a variety of ways to explore nature and history: turquoise Bear Lake, a refuge where migratory birds nest, caves and sites commemorating the pioneer era. As you plan your trip, you can start by choosing your main focus—lake and landscape, wildlife, geology or history.

Lakeside Landscape and Birdlife

Bear Lake State Park is in southeastern Idaho, near the Cache Mountain Range. The turquoise color of Bear Lake is attributed to the reflection of calcium carbonate, or limestone, deposits suspended in the lake. Several unique animal species are also found in Bear Lake and live only in this lake. This brings together two distinct aspects of nature: a striking color phenomenon and animal species whose range is limited to the lake.

Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge is in Bear Lake County, near the community of Montpelier, Idaho. It encompasses part of the historic Dingle Swamp along the Bear River, north of Bear Lake. About 100 species of migratory birds nest there. The refuge brings together wetlands, a river landscape and nesting habitat in one distinct natural setting.

Pioneer History and Architecture

The National Oregon/California Trail Center is in Montpelier, Idaho, along the historic Oregon/California Trail. It offers a fully staged interpretive experience, with historically accurate exhibit areas and live interpreters. Visitors can explore a gunsmith shop and a general store, ride in a covered wagon and spend time at the Clover Creek Encampment. Here, history is conveyed not only through exhibit areas, but also through staged settings and activities.

The Paris Tabernacle is considered one of the West’s significant pioneer landmarks and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1889, it is a Romanesque-style Mormon tabernacle made of red sandstone. The stone came from a quarry 18 miles away and had to be hauled by wagon or sled. Its design details include intricate wooden ceilings and stonework. This offers a different approach to pioneer history than the staged interpretation at the Trail Center: here, the building’s form, materials and craftsmanship take center stage.

Caves: A Guided Tour and Year-Round Ice

The guided tour of Minnetonka Cave lasts 90 minutes and covers half a mile. The cave has nine rooms featuring stalactites, stalagmites and banded travertine. Visitors should expect 400 steps and temperatures of about 40 degrees year-round. If you plan to visit this cave, check seasonal operating details again before setting out.

Paris Ice Cave offers a different experience: its ice never completely melts, even during the hottest summers, and ice formations develop year-round. A footbridge crosses the ice at the cave’s lowest point. While the tour length and steps at Minnetonka Cave are important for planning, the ice and footbridge define the cave experience described at Paris Ice Cave.

North Beach and the Route to the State Park

North Beach in St. Charles, Idaho, has a very large swimming area thanks to the gently sloping lake bottom. Two boat ramps are used to launch motorized watercraft and Jet Skis. You can rent stand-up paddleboards and kayaks from local beach concessions. To reach Bear Lake State Park, take North Beach Road and East Beach Road from U.S. 89 near St. Charles. As road and access conditions can change seasonally, check the route before setting out.

These options offer clear differences when choosing a focus for your trip: the lake and birdlife, pioneer history, a guided cave tour or year-round ice formations each offer a distinct experience. North Beach adds swimming and water sports to the natural attractions. This can help you decide which discoveries you want to prioritize during your stay in Bear Lake County.
