A trip to Valley offers different ways to explore nature and culture: you can discover lakes and rivers, explore trails, or learn more about the region’s history. Options range from activities on the water to museums and recurring community events.

Discover History and Culture

The Historic Roseberry Heritage Site features a Finnish farm from the late 19th or early 20th century, including a sauna. The farm brings together a specific chapter in settlement history and a vivid portrayal of everyday life: Finnish heritage and the sauna are presented as part of the same story.

In McCall, the Central Idaho Historical Museum explores the region’s history. The grounds cover four acres and include eight buildings, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Exhibits cover fire lookout towers, the McCall Mill, logging and forestry, as well as Smokey the Bear and the history of the region. Here, you can explore both specific topics from the area’s working history and a broader view of the region.

The McCall Smokejumper Base offers another institutional connection to the forest: it is one of only four Forest Service training facilities for smokejumpers in the United States. This distinction highlights the facility’s special role in nationwide training without conflating it with the museum exhibits.

The McCall Winter Carnival also adds to the cultural experiences. During its ten-day run, the program includes local vendors and food options, live music, public art, and other community events. Dates and format may change from year to year, so check the information for the relevant year if you plan to attend the Carnival.

Lakes, Rivers, and Trails

Lake Cascade is one of Idaho’s largest bodies of water and lies next to Donnelly and Cascade. The lake is a prominent natural landmark alongside two named communities. The Payette River Scenic Byway offers extensive services in Cascade, Donnelly, and McCall. These place names can be useful for planning your trip if you want to orient yourself around the communities named here.

Ponderosa State Park is next to Payette Lake. In the park, you can canoe and kayak on the North Fork of the Payette River, and rentals are available. Alongside the lake as a landscape feature, there are also specific ways to enjoy the river. Popular activities at Warm Lake include boating, canoeing, and swimming. There are also opportunities for hiking and mountain biking in the area around Warm Lake. If you’re drawn to nature around water and forest, these activities offer different ways to spend time outdoors.

For another view of the forest landscape, visit Warm Lake Campground, which is set in an old-growth ponderosa pine forest. If you’d rather explore on foot, you can hike the Goose Creek Falls Trail (#354) from the Gordon Titus parking lot on Goose Lake Road.

Outside McCall, Brundage Mountain has a lift-served mountain bike park. This offering is seasonal, so check the current lift and trail status before you visit. Planning needs therefore vary by activity: the mountain bike park operates seasonally, while activities at Warm Lake span the water and nearby trails.
