Franklin County lies in northeast Georgia at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and on the shore of 56,000-acre Lake Hartwell. Visitors can sail on the lake; on land, experiences range from state park landscapes to museums and historic buildings. Nature and history reveal themselves in specific details—from tree species along a trail to the construction of a covered bridge.

Lake, Forest, and Trails

Sailing is one of the activities available at Lake Hartwell. The lake gives Franklin County’s natural side a clear connection to the water, while the state parks bring other landscape details into view.

Tugaloo State Park is located on a wooded peninsula. The Sassafras Trail winds through oaks, walnut trees, mulberry trees, and cherry trees. The park also has a six-lane mega ramp used for major fishing tournaments and access to the lake. The same park thus brings together a woodland landscape, a trail, and a facility connected to fishing and lake access.

Victoria Bryant State Park presents a different landscape: it lies among the rolling hills of Georgia’s Upper Piedmont, and a stream flows through the park. Its longer perimeter trail passes through hardwood forests and crosses streams. The park descriptions therefore emphasize different features: at Tugaloo, the focus is on the wooded peninsula and named tree species; at Victoria Bryant, it is on hills, a stream, and hardwood forest.

History and Buildings

In Royston, the hometown of Ty Cobb, the Ty Cobb Museum is located in the Joe A. Adams Professional Building. The building stands on land that once belonged to Ty Cobb’s family. At the museum, you can view artifacts, original artwork, and visual displays about Ty Cobb. Its connection to the town and the different types of exhibits give visitors two specific points of interest.

The Lavonia Carnegie Library was built in 1911. In Franklin Springs, the Franklin Springs Heritage Hall in City Hall features extensive displays with photos and information about historic sites in Franklin Springs. History appears here in different forms: as a building with a specific construction date and as a richly illustrated presentation about historic places in the city.

In Carnesville, two buildings can be viewed through very different details. Cromer's Mill Covered Bridge was built in 1907; it is 132 feet long, has a single span, and is constructed using Town Lattice trusses. The current Franklin County Courthouse in Carnesville was built in 1906 with Neoclassical features, including columns and sand-colored masonry. The bridge’s dimensions and construction provide precise points of reference, while the courthouse’s style and masonry shape its impression.

Market, Motorsports, and Infrastructure

The Lavonia Depot Farmers Market offers fresh locally grown produce and handmade goods. Since offerings and dates may vary by season, check the current market schedule before your visit.

Motorsports also has a clearly defined profile: Lavonia Motor Speedway is a 3/8-mile, slightly banked oval dirt track. The public Franklin/Hart Airport has a lighted 3,500-foot runway.
