More than 80 trains travel through Cordele’s unique Diamond Crossing every day. This volume of rail traffic gives the town a distinctive feature of present-day life; nearby, historic buildings, archives and museums tell other chapters of its history. A trip to Crisp County offers a range of discoveries: railroads, heritage and experiences at Lake Blackshear.

Railroad History and Cordele’s Heritage

The Cordele Commercial Historic District includes the historic commercial, institutional and transportation-related buildings and structures in the downtown business district. This mix makes the district a record of a range of public and economic functions.

The Cordele Historic Museum & Welcome Center displays artifacts and archives related to Cordele’s history and also serves as an art gallery and event venue. Historic collections, art and events offer different perspectives on local cultural life. The Carnegie Free Library opened in 1915 and was the first library in the state of Georgia to provide library service to an entire county. Another Cordele landmark is the Titan I missile, which has welcomed travelers since 1969.

Remembrance and Recreation at Georgia Veterans State Park

Georgia Veterans State Park & Resort was established as a memorial to American veterans. Its museum displays aircraft, including a Boeing B-29A, armored vehicles, uniforms, weapons and medals. The collection spans a broad range of historical periods, from the American Revolutionary War to the Gulf War.

The park also offers recreational activities, including an Archery & Air Gun Range and an 18-hole golf course. Golf course operations may vary seasonally. The park thus offers both insights into military history and opportunities for sports and recreation.

Lake Blackshear: Infrastructure History and Water Sports

Lake Blackshear was created in 1930 by damming the Flint River to provide Crisp County residents with low-cost energy. Its creation is also part of the region’s infrastructure history. Today, visitors can enjoy boating, water skiing, trophy fishing, swimming and other water sports on the lake.

Pontoon boats are available to rent at the Lake Blackshear marina; one can accommodate up to twelve guests. Water conditions and operator offerings may vary, so check current information before planning specific activities. A national bass fishing tournament is also held at the lake each year. Dates may change, so check the event date if you plan to schedule your trip around it.

Races, Train Tours and Seasonal Produce

Cordele Motor Speedway hosts weekly Division Trials. These include INEX-sanctioned Bandolero and Legends races, as well as races in the Go-Kart, Mini Stock, Enduro, Pure Stock, Super Street/Sportsman and Outlaw Late Model classes. Race dates may change; check the calendar if a race is an essential part of your plans.

Depending on the tour, the Historic SAM Shortline Railroad travels to Plains, Americus or Archery. Individual excursion routes may change, so check the tour for your preferred date before planning. The Cordele State Farmers Market offers another seasonal discovery: during the summer months, all kinds of Georgia-grown fruits and vegetables are available there; availability may vary.
