Macon County offers a range of discoveries centered on memorials, historic architecture, river activities, and seasonal events. When looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which of these themes will shape your trip.
Andersonville: Remembrance and History
Andersonville National Historic Site is a memorial to all American prisoners of war throughout U.S. history. The site was home to Camp Sumter, one of the largest Confederate military prisons of the Civil War. During its 14 months of operation, more than 45,000 Union soldiers were imprisoned there. Visitors can see restored sections of the stockade, offering a tangible connection to the prison’s history.
Nearly 13,000 Union soldiers who died were buried in the memorial’s cemetery. It has been designated a National Cemetery since 1865 and remains active. There is no admission fee for Andersonville National Historic Site; check the details before your trip.
Historic Montezuma
The Macon County Historical Museum collects, preserves, and shares the history of the settlement of communities along the Flint River—from the first Indigenous peoples to the present day. The exhibits focus on the period from the county’s founding in 1837 through the end of the 20th century. The museum is housed in Montezuma’s train depot, built in 1890 and restored in 2002. School tours and special visits are available by prior arrangement; check availability in advance.
Historic Downtown Montezuma also offers a look at older architecture: the town center is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and its architecture dates back to the 1850s. It is part of the Presidential Pathways travel region in Southwest Georgia and lies along the Andersonville Trail. Another example of historic architecture is the Macon County Courthouse in Oglethorpe, built in 1894 in the Romanesque Revival style.
Routes and Community History
The self-guided Historic Driving Tour includes 31 stops in Oglethorpe, Marshallville, and Montezuma. It features historic homes and churches that survived the Civil War; the buildings date from the mid-19th century. The tour connects several places and buildings, while a visit to the museum focuses on the history along the Flint River.
In Montezuma, the Flint River Farms Preservation Society established Flint River Farm School Community Park at the site of the Flint River Farms Resettlement Project. The project was part of a New Deal program that offered Black farmers the opportunity to own land independently. A Beachy Amish-Mennonite community founded a permanent settlement near Montezuma in 1953, and it still exists today. Mennonite community churches in the Montezuma area hold Sunday services; confirm the details before attending.
River and Landscape
Montezuma Bluff Wildlife Management Area covers 500 acres of largely untouched old-growth hardwood forest. Moist, shaded slopes descend along a 150-foot limestone escarpment overlooking a wooded swamp. The landscape offers a striking contrast to the historic buildings and memorials.
The Flint River offers visitors in Macon County opportunities for boating and fishing. Hooks Landing is a public river access point on Highway 49 between Oglethorpe and Montezuma. Whitewater Creek Park is open year-round and offers camping, picnicking, fishing, hiking, pavilions, and cabin rentals. Overnight accommodations include RV sites with hookups, tent sites, and cabins. Check reservations and availability in advance.
Seasonal Experiences and Local History
The story of the Elberta peach leads to Marshallville: Rumph developed it on his family’s plantation near town. In 1875, the peach was first shipped to markets in the northern United States. In Oglethorpe, the Chase Farms roadside stand is open from June through August. William L. Brown Farms invites visitors to its farm market in summer, offering fruit, vegetables, homemade peach ice cream, and flowers for picking.
Oglethorpe celebrates the Wild Turkey Festival every year on the fourth Saturday in March and the Deer Day Festival every year on the third Saturday in October. Historic Downtown Montezuma hosts the annual Beaver Creek Festival and Duck Race; its dates may change. Check current event dates before planning your trip around them.
