In Mcdonough, historical topics range from photographs of significant landmarks to a 19th-century courthouse. The Re-Taking History Walking Tour includes 15 stops in downtown; museums add to these perspectives with digital displays, photography, and the history of Blacksville. Southern Belle Farm’s seasonal offerings are another highlight.

History on a Walking Tour and at the Square

The Re-Taking History Walking Tour follows a route through downtown Mcdonough. At the 15 stops, markers display historical photographs of significant landmarks, past and present. Audio stories cover the cotton tradition as well as train and bus depots. The photos offer a visual comparison across different eras, while the audio content focuses on cotton and transportation history.

The Henry County Courthouse, a Romanesque Revival-style building dating to 1897, stands on the historic Courthouse Square. The Square itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The year of construction and architectural style refer to the courthouse, while the register listing applies to the Square. This makes it possible to consider the individual building and the Square’s historic setting as two distinct aspects.

Museums with Different Perspectives

The C.O. Polk Interactive Museum is housed in Mcdonough’s historic post office, dating to the 1940s. Its exhibits include a 15-foot digital timeline and projection-mapped displays of the historic Town Square. A multi-part digital object theater and a documentary share the history of the Blacksville community. The timeline, projections, and object theater use different digital formats; the focus on Blacksville complements the Town Square displays.

The Camera Museum traces the development of photography from its beginnings in the 1830s to the start of the digital age in the 1990s. The museum has dedicated spaces for photography classes and workshops. It is less than a mile south of Mcdonough Square on Macon Street, also known as Highway 42. The collection’s historical scope and the spaces for classes and workshops make photography both a subject of historical interest and a focus of the learning program.

Heritage Park and Seasonal Farm Experiences

The historic village at Heritage Park includes a settler’s log cabin dating to 1827, a one-room schoolhouse, and a steam locomotive from around 1934. The park is also home to the Veterans Museum, housed in a red barn and featuring donated artifacts, uniforms, and a Huey helicopter. Free tours are led by volunteer veterans. The village, school, and locomotive offer different historical perspectives from the museum’s military exhibits.

Southern Belle Farm is a family-run agricultural operation covering 330 acres. Berry and peach picking are offered seasonally; visitors can pick their own strawberries in a 15-acre strawberry field. The farm market and bakery are also seasonal offerings. For the fall 2026 season, the farm offers educational visits for school groups. These visits cover agriculture, farm animals, crops, and where food comes from. If these visits are relevant to your plans, check the dates in advance.

A concession stand is located by the amphitheater at Alexander Park.
