Lake Hartwell defines Hart County with more than 960 miles of shoreline and approximately 56,000 acres of water. The lake offers more than sheer size: for anglers, specific fishing opportunities are part of the experience on the water.

On the Water and in the Woods

Lake Hartwell offers fishing for largemouth bass, bream, crappie, catfish, striped bass, and hybrid bass. Those interested in fishing will find several named fish species that make the lake a distinctive fishing destination.

The Georgia section of the Hartwell Dam Walking Trail is 1.37 miles long one way and follows the shoreline to the concrete section of Hartwell Dam. The one-way distance makes the trail length easy to understand: it describes the route to this endpoint, not a loop.

Paynes Creek offers a different landscape. The 399-acre site is characterized by mixed pine and hardwood forests. The lake’s open waters and a wooded area with its own vegetation thus offer distinct natural settings.

Museums, Buildings, and History

The Ty Cobb Museum is located in Royston, inside the Joe A. Adams professional building. The building stands on a site that once belonged to Ty Cobb’s family. The museum displays artifacts, original artwork, and visual depictions of Ty Cobb. The Cobb Theater also has a distinctive design feature: its stadium-style seating is part of a mural collage.

The Teasley-Holland House is notable for its architecture and age. This single-story Victorian frame building was constructed around 1881. It offers a different way to explore history than a collection of objects: the house’s architecture, materials, and approximate date shape the impression it makes.

The Hart County Historical Museum displays artifacts relating to Nancy Hart, a heroine of the American Revolutionary War, as well as a Coca-Cola bottling machine, Hart County’s first stereo system, and clothing from the county’s early days. Political remembrance and objects from everyday life share space in this collection.

The Hartwell Railroad was established in 1877 and connected Hartwell, Georgia, with the Charlotte, Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Railway. Another place to discover is Railroad Street Park, which features playgrounds and murals; the renovated depot building houses a museum and event spaces.

Festivals and Local Specialties

Depot Day and HartOberFest in Hartwell combine live music, bratwurst, and beer with arts and crafts, vendor booths, and food from vendors in the historic market square. Activities for children are also part of the events. If you plan to attend one of the festivals, check the dates for each event.

Mead is the focus at Southern Origin Meadery: this agricultural meadery offers craft varieties ranging from dry to sweet. Mead tastings are available in the tasting room, along with several varieties of raw honey and handcrafted cheeses and cured meats. The contrast between dry and sweet mead gives the selection a clear range, complemented by honey and savory specialties.
