The upper floor of the Rabinowitz Building served as the first courthouse, or first courtroom, and also as an office for the administration of Bacon County. This shows that history here is reflected not only in construction dates, but also in a building’s former use.

Buildings and Historic Milestones

The Rabinowitz Building was built in 1915 by a local contractor and is significant in the areas of architecture, commerce, and politics and government. The Alma Depot was built in 1906, and the Bacon County Courthouse in 1919. The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the Bacon County School in Alma was added to the same register in 2007. The dates tell different stories: 1906, 1915, and 1919 are construction years, while 2007 is the year of a listing. This distinction helps separate building history from later recognition.

Blueberry Farming and the Festival

The Georgia Blueberry Festival takes place every year on the first weekend in June at Goldwasser Park. Visitors can enjoy entertainment, activities, and food there. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates in advance. Bacon County began hosting the festival in 1974: this year marks the start of the county hosting it, while the first weekend in June is its recurring date.

Blueberry farming also has a long history. Commercial cultivation came to Bacon County in the early 1970s; the county remains a center of blueberry farming in Georgia. Thus, an annual event and the county’s agricultural role sit side by side—two different timescales associated with blueberries.

Recreational Areas and Nearby Parks

The recreation park in Alma and Bacon County covers 117 acres. It has a playground and three baseball fields. The park offers a different focus from the historic buildings: here, play and sports facilities take center stage.

General Coffee State Park, located outside Bacon County, is nearby. Its Heritage Farm presents the agricultural history of South Georgia through log cabins, a corncrib, a tobacco barn, and a cane mill. Laura S. Walker State Park is also nearby and outside Bacon County. Alligators and carnivorous pitcher plants can be found there. The two state parks therefore offer different points of interest: the Heritage Farm focuses on agricultural history, while Laura S. Walker State Park features the animal and plant species mentioned above.

Getting Around Bacon and Alma

Bacon County is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Georgia Highway 32. A military helicopter is on display in Alma. Since its display status may change, check in advance whether it is still on view if you specifically plan to visit. The Veterans Memorial Wall in Alma is a place where you can pay your respects.

The Alma/Bacon County Welcome Center has public restrooms and is located in a renovated former school building. Check the current opening hours before planning a stop.
