Sanibel is a barrier island fringed with mangroves, shallow bays and white-sand beaches. The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge also showcases a variety of landscapes: On Sanibel, it includes at least 6,470 acres of mangrove forest, submerged seagrass beds, cordgrass marshes and subtropical hardwood hammocks. When looking for a hotel in Sanibel, your planned focus may be the deciding factor: Will your trip focus mainly on nature and wildlife viewing, the coast or island history?

Experience Nature at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife Drive in the refuge is a four-mile, one-way road open to pedestrians, cyclists and cars. Guided 90-minute tram tours are also available. Operating days and visitor conditions may change; check the refuge’s official website for current information before your visit. This lets you plan your visit around your preferred way of exploring, without assuming a specific driving time on the road.

The Bailey Tract is a 100-acre inland wetland within the refuge on Sanibel. Its trails are accessible on foot or by bicycle from sunrise to sunset; access and refuge conditions may change. The Wulfert Keys Trail runs for one-third of a mile along a power line corridor from Wildlife Drive to Pine Island Sound. Visitors may see brown pelicans, osprey or manatees there. Trail access and possible sightings depend on refuge conditions. The two locations offer different considerations for planning: At the Bailey Tract, daylight sets the time frame for the trails, while the Wulfert Keys Trail is notable for its short stated distance and potential wildlife sightings.

Beach, Mangrove Trails and Lighthouse

Lighthouse Beach Park offers a sandy beach on the Gulf of Mexico for swimming, sunbathing and shell collecting. It also has nature trails and a boardwalk that winds through mangrove forest and along the shoreline, making it suitable for bird and wildlife watching. Beach conditions, safety notices, park facilities and access may change; check the city’s current information before your visit. This lets you combine different activities when exploring the coast, without treating the beach and nature trails as one and the same.

The park is also home to the Sanibel Island Lighthouse, a striking cast-iron lighthouse first put into service in 1884. The lighthouse is not open for public tours. This distinction is useful when planning your trip: The park offers a beach and trails, while the lighthouse itself is a historic landmark that cannot be visited as part of a public tour.

Island History and Marine Life

The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village tells Sanibel’s story from the time of the Calusa and the Spanish period through to the pioneer families who settled on the island in the 19th century. The Living Gallery of Aquariums and Marine Life at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum offers a different focus: It features about 60 species of mollusks and other animals and includes interactive touch pools. The attractions appeal to different interests— island history on the one hand, and marine life and interactive pools on the other. Exhibits and programs may change; check current information if the Living Gallery is a key part of your plans.

Getting Around Sanibel’s Trails

Sanibel’s network of separated shared-use paths spans more than 26 miles, from Lighthouse Beach Park to Blind Pass Bridge. Trail conditions and permitted vehicle classes may change; check the city’s current information before using the trails. Together with the trails in the refuge and the nature trails at Lighthouse Beach Park, they offer a range of places for exercise and wildlife watching. If you’re looking for a hotel on Sanibel, weighing the refuge, coast or history can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
