The Centennial Village Museum in Greeley explores the western heritage of Colorado’s High Plains: the eight-hectare open-air museum brings history to life through 35 historic buildings and costumed interpreters. The combination of historic structures and living history gives a visit a clear focus.
History from Different Perspectives
The Greeley History Museum focuses on the history of Greeley and Weld County. Topics include the founding of the Union Colony, the region’s agricultural heritage, water use and development over time. Alongside local history, you’ll encounter questions that concern agriculture and water in the region.
The Meeker Home Museum, Greeley’s oldest building, presents the history of the city’s founding family through original furnishings and rare artifacts. It is currently closed, but you can still explore Greeley’s roots through the virtual exhibit and the interpretive panels outside. Check the latest status before your trip.
White-Plumb Farm also tells the story of agriculture: the farm’s history includes livestock raising and the cultivation of alfalfa, sugar beets, seed potatoes, beans and other vegetables. The farm is currently closed. It is designated a Colorado Centennial Farm and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Fort Vasquez Museum is located at the site of a trading post established by Louis Vasquez and Andrew Sublette in 1835 on the South Platte River, in what is now Platteville. Exhibits include archaeological finds from excavations, objects from Indigenous American cultures and topics from the fur trade era.
The Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley offers a different collection: more than 600 railroad-related artifacts. Visitors can also explore a full-scale wooden Colorado and Southern caboose from inside and out.
Ponds, Trails and Nature Experiences
St. Vrain State Park includes 689 acres of land and 228 acres of water spread across several ponds. You can walk on nature trails alongside ten ponds; the park also offers especially good birdwatching. Boating is also possible. The entrance is at 3785 Weld County Road 24 1/2, Firestone, Colorado 80504. As operating and admission conditions may change, check ahead; also review the rules and inspections for watercraft.
Island Grove Regional Park in Greeley covers 145 acres, with walking paths nearby. Aven’s Village, which has a fully accessible playground, is located in the park. Island Grove Splash Park offers children free interactive water play across a spacious splash area and operates seasonally. Check the season for your travel dates. The park also hosts the annual Greeley Stampede, which attracts thousands of visitors each year.
The Weld Legacy Trail is Weld County’s first multi-use trail. It is suitable for walking, running and cycling; motorized vehicles are not allowed. In northern Weld County, the Pawnee National Grasslands offer opportunities for hiking, camping, picnicking, horseback riding and stargazing. A paved regional multi-use trail follows the Cache la Poudre River and runs through the Cache la Poudre National Heritage Area. It recognizes the river’s cultural and natural significance.
