More than 140 miles of trails and over 2,500 acres of parkland give Thornton a strong connection to outdoor recreation. Visitors who want to include parks and nature in their stay will find several options: the city’s trail network, the Gravel Lakes, Carpenter Park, and the Big Dry Creek corridor.

Trails and Open Space

The Big Dry Creek corridor offers opportunities for passive recreation, wildlife habitat, and open space. Together with its floodplain, it is an important natural resource for east-west wildlife movement and regional trail connectivity. More than 300 acres of open land have been preserved along the corridor in Thornton.

Thornton offers a variety of natural features: the city has an extensive trail network, while the Big Dry Creek corridor also highlights habitat, open space, and wildlife movement. This distinction can help you decide whether to focus on trails or include the natural corridor in your travel plans.

Parks and Visiting Hours

Thornton’s public parks are open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Gravel Lakes have seasonal hours: from March 15 through October 31, they are open from sunrise to sunset. Check the hours before your visit, especially if your plans depend on a specific opening window.

Carpenter Park has a skate park and trails. The Carpenter Recreation Center also offers a place to exercise: it has an indoor walking and running track with a soft synthetic surface. Twelve laps equal one mile. This makes the track’s length easy to gauge when planning a walk or run, and clearly distinguishes it from outdoor trails.

Arts and Culture

The Thornton Arts & Culture Center, located at 9209 Dorothy Boulevard, opened in 2011 as a municipal center for the performing and visual arts. The center includes a gallery, a theater area, a city archive, and offices. For OZ Gallery exhibitions, it is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and every second Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Hours may change; check them before your visit.

Arts Thornton’s program includes year-round educational programs through the Thornton Arts Academy, seasonal community events, the ArtsThornton music series, quarterly OZ Gallery exhibitions, and public art. The cultural offerings range from exhibitions and music to educational programs and art in public spaces. You can plan which of these to include in your stay based on the dates and hours of each offering.

More Things to Do

The Thornton Harvest Fest features a skate competition at the Thomas J. Slocum Memorial Skate Park. Events are judged in the scooter, bicycle, and skateboard categories. The festival also features more than 100 artisans, home-based businesses, and other vendors. Festival and competition details may change from year to year; check the dates and program before planning your visit around them.

Golf is another option in Thornton: the city has a public golf course covering 144 acres and playing to par 72. Facilities include a driving range, a putting green, and a restaurant. The acreage and par provide a clear picture of the course; its other facilities set it apart from the city’s trails, parks, and cultural offerings.
