Adams County can be discovered from different perspectives through its trails, river landscapes, and cultural sites. This is especially clear with the trails: Some routes are comparable by length, while others are distinguished by an explicitly stated association with a trail network.
Trails and Parklands
The Clear Creek Trail is nine miles long, and the Niver Canal Trail is two miles long. This makes the Niver Canal Trail the shorter of the two named routes, while the Clear Creek Trail covers a significantly longer distance. The South Platte River Trail is part of the Colorado Front Range Trail, so you can also take its named trail affiliation into account, in addition to its length.
Pelican Ponds lies on the west bank of the South Platte River and encompasses 200 acres of open space. It has trails and walking paths. A nature play area was completed and opened for use in October 2020. The riverbank, open space, and trails give you specific points of reference if you want to explore the county’s natural landscape. The play area adds a dedicated feature to this open space.
Rotella Park encompasses 20 acres of parkland and a seven-acre lake. The park also provides access to the Niver Creek Trail. City View Park has a playground with fitness stations designed for users aged 13 and older; the park also provides access to the South Platte River Trail via the Niver Creek Trail. The two parks can be distinguished by specific features: Rotella Park is defined by its lake size and trail access, while City View has an age-specific play facility and the stated connection to the South Platte River Trail. Note the different trail names: The two-mile figure refers to the Niver Canal Trail, while the park access is to the Niver Creek Trail.
Riverdale Regional Park connects to the South Platte River Trail and offers access to disc golf and volleyball courts. This adds two clearly named recreational activities to the trail connection, distinguishing the park from the other features described here.
Memorials, Art, and Poetry
The Adams County Veterans Memorial includes marble monuments commemorating the individual branches of the armed forces. A replica of the USS Colorado also extends into Mann-Nyholt Lake. Both the military dedication and the shape of the ship replica define the character of the memorial.
The Taza Gallery and Coffee House is located in the Adams County Government Center. Through performances, workshops, and events, the Adams County Poet Laureate Program brings poetry, literature, and the performing arts to the Adams County community. Original works are also created during the residency. Another art form can be found at Riverdale Regional Park: a mural by Bimmer Torres is painted on a water tank. Together, these examples represent different forms of culture—a gallery, a residency program, and a work of art in a park.
Getting Your Bearings and an Annual Event
Gateway Plaza is a precise reference point for finding your way. It is next to the Federal/Clear Creek Light Rail Station at 60th Avenue and Federal Street. An annual event may also factor into your planning: Adams County hosts an Independence Day celebration every year on July 3 at Riverdale Regional Park. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the date of that year’s event in advance.
