Imperial Beach combines long sandy beaches with a surf history that stretches back to the Tijuana Sloughs. It is also home to the Tijuana Estuary, an internationally significant wetland, as well as trails, parks and recreational activities. One simple question can help you plan: Should your stay focus mainly on the coast and pier, wildlife viewing, or recreational and cultural activities? This can help you compare the different options without turning them into a fixed itinerary.

Beaches, Waves and Pier

Imperial Beach has 3.5 miles of largely uncrowded white-sand beaches and big waves. Swimming is one of the activities available at the beaches. The coast is a central part of the area; visitors interested in water sports and the beach will find a different focus here than at the wetland or in the parks.

The Imperial Beach Pier offers two different reasons to visit at different times of day: fishing at sunrise and panoramic views at sunset. These options give the pier its own place in your day’s plans. When deciding between a morning or evening visit, consider whether you would rather fish or watch the sunset.

Surf History at Portwood Pier Plaza

Imperial Beach’s surf history began at the Tijuana Sloughs, where Dempsey Holder first surfed the big waves in 1937. At Portwood Pier Plaza, plaques on surfboard benches tell the story of the city’s big-wave surfing pioneers, spanning the period from 1937 into the 1950s. This brings together a specific beginning and a longer pioneering era.

Surfhenge, a colorful public art monument celebrating surfing, also stands at Portwood Pier Plaza. Together, the plaques and artwork offer two different ways to explore local surf history: historical context and artistic representation. The plaza thus offers a cultural connection to the beach without requiring surfing to be the main focus.

Tijuana Estuary: Wetland and Trails

In the Tijuana River National Estuary in Imperial Beach, the freshwater of the Tijuana River mixes with the salt water of the Pacific. Because of its important bird habitat, the Tijuana Estuary is a Ramsar wetland of international importance recognized by the United Nations. The reserve draws birdwatchers and wildlife photographers from around the world; nature viewing is a focus in its own right alongside the beach and surf history.

The Tijuana Estuary has several accessible trails for hiking and biking: North McCoy Trail, South McCoy Trail, River Mouth Loop and Seacoast Trail. These four names help distinguish the specific activity options in the reserve. Visitors interested in native plants can also join a tour led by a knowledgeable docent. Check the schedule before your visit.

The Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center is located at the corner of 3rd Street and Caspian Way in Imperial Beach. It offers practical, interactive activities for all ages. Border Field State Park is also nearby. Its trails run along a 1.5-mile stretch of coast and inland area; the sand dunes and salt marshes there provide important wildlife habitat.

Parks, Recreation and Events

Dunes Park on Seacoast Drive offers ocean views and beach access. Sports and Skate Park offers a different kind of park experience, with a skate park and five ball fields. The gymnasium is closed for renovation. The Sports Park Recreation Center offers open gym play for basketball, pickleball and volleyball, as well as classes and activities for all ages. As operating details can change, check the latest information before your visit.

Music in the Park is a clear seasonal fixture on the events calendar. The series takes place at Veterans Park every Friday in August; admission is free, and food vendors are on site. Annual details and vendor participation may change, so check event dates and current offerings before your trip.

Choosing a Focus for Your Stay

You can plan around your interests and schedule: the pier and beach offer the coast, waves and the history of big-wave surfing; the estuary focuses on bird habitat, trails and native plants. Parks and the recreation center add sports and activities, while Music in the Park is a special August offering. This lets you choose the themes that suit your stay and keep track of dates for activities whose details may change.
