Encinitas can be explored through a wide range of interests: equipped beaches, trails in natural areas, gardens and a cinema with an early history of sound films. These places offer different starting points for planning, from a stay at the beach to nature and cultural experiences.

Beaches: amenities and distinct features

Moonlight Beach offers ADA-accessible facilities and lifeguard service year-round. Amenities include picnic areas, restrooms, showers, fire pits, a playground and volleyball courts. If these amenities are important to your plans, check their current status before visiting: facilities and operating conditions can change.

The City of Encinitas also maintains around 45 acres of beach areas, as well as numerous beach access stairs, viewpoints and beach facilities. Swami’s Beach Park offers a different emphasis: it features public art, views, world-class waves and local lore. Beach highlights range from the practical amenities at Moonlight Beach to the art, views and local stories at Swami’s.

Compare trails and landscapes

The San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve is a 979-acre, mostly flat estuary. Escondido Creek and La Orilla Creek flow into the Pacific Ocean at the lagoon. It offers seven miles of easy to moderate trails and the approximately quarter-mile-long Annie’s Canyon Trail. Trail conditions can change; check them before planning a specific outing.

Manchester Preserve is a 123-acre open space with around four miles of trails. These distances offer a direct comparison of the different trail options: about a quarter mile on Annie’s Canyon Trail, around four miles at Manchester Preserve and seven miles of trails at the lagoon. In addition, Encinitas’ Parks, Beaches and Trails Department maintains 40 miles of trails. This citywide figure describes the extent of trails maintained by the department, not a single hiking route.

Gardens with different focuses

The Meditation Gardens at Self-Realization Fellowship feature colorful plants, meditation nooks, koi ponds and ocean views. By contrast, San Diego Botanic Garden offers three children’s gardens where families can enjoy activities together outdoors. The two places therefore have different focuses: landscaped gardens with ponds and views on the one hand, and outdoor activities for families on the other. Family offerings and facilities can change; check the current status if they are important to your plans.

Cultural history and nature knowledge

La Paloma Theatre opened on February 11, 1928, and was among the first cinemas to show sound films. Its opening date and its early role in cinema history give Encinitas a clear cultural and historical landmark.

Exhibits at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center explore the history of the reserve and the plants and animals that live there. This gives visitors a different way to engage with nature than the trails described above: here, the focus is on exhibits and the history of the protected area. Together with the historic cinema, this offers options for visitors interested in both nature and culture.
