Twentynine Palms offers several ways to explore: a short oasis trail, a longer hike with a stated elevation gain, outdoor art, local history and exhibitions. Information about routes, themes and visitor offerings can help you balance your interests in nature and culture when planning your stay.

Oasis Trails with Different Route Profiles

The Oasis of Mara is a 0.5-mile trail in Twentynine Palms at the headquarters of Joshua Tree National Park. The flat, paved loop is the park’s most accessible place to see the California fan palm. Information panels along the trail explain the site’s historical significance and local ecology. This short route therefore brings together a specific nature topic and the history of the site.

The hike to 49 Palms Oasis offers a different route profile: it covers three miles round trip, with about 300 feet of elevation gain in each direction. The trailhead is accessed from the western end of Twentynine Palms via Canyon Road. Compared with the 0.5-mile Oasis of Mara, both the longer overall distance and the elevation gain are important planning considerations here. These details give you a concrete basis for choosing between the trails according to your preferred route profile.

Murals and Local History

The Oasis of Murals began in 1994 with a local merchants committee. By 2014, 26 outdoor murals had been commissioned. They depict the history of Twentynine Palms as well as the flora and fauna of the Mojave Desert and neighboring Joshua Tree National Park. The Oasis of Murals also offers a self-guided tour of 26 murals and sculptures documenting the city’s culture and history.

Museum, Maps and Exhibition

Admission to the Old Schoolhouse Museum is free. Museum staff are available to provide additional information and tours. Since availability may change, check the latest information before your visit if a tour is important to your plans.

The City of 29 Palms Visitor Center is located in downtown Twentynine Palms and provides maps for Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave Trails National Monument, Mojave National Preserve, as well as regional roads and hiking trails. The selection therefore includes protected areas, roads and hiking trails. If you need specific maps, check the latest information in advance; visitor materials may change.

Universal Threads is an exhibition shown year-round at the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center. It explores relationships between plants, animals, earth, sky and human life. While the panels at the Oasis of Mara explain the site’s historical significance and local ecology, Universal Threads focuses on relationships between natural and human realms.
