Explore Galt through its market traditions and pioneer history. Two questions can help with planning your trip: Which market day suits your stay, and which historical focus interests you? The Galt Saturday Market Series and the Christmas Bazaar follow clearly defined calendar dates. The Rae House Museum and the McFarland Living History Ranch offer different perspectives on pioneer times.

Markets: Traditions and Dates

The Galt Market is a sprawling outdoor market with more than 400 vendors; the number may change. Its history goes back to a farmers' market held at the former Sacramento County Fairgrounds in the 1950s. This brings a current market format and a historical origin together: one describes the outdoor market, the other the tradition of farmers' markets.

The Galt Saturday Market Series takes place on the first Saturday of each month from March through November. More than 75 vendors offer baked goods, food, arts and crafts, and seasonal flowers. The selection may vary by market day. The series attracts more than 10,000 visitors, including visitors from outside the area; attendance may vary. If you are planning your trip around the series, check the specific date in advance.

The two recurring events follow one another on the calendar: the Saturday Market Series runs from March through November, while the Christmas Bazaar takes place on the first weekend in December. If you want to use an event date as an anchor for your trip, you can choose between a series spanning several months and an annual December weekend.

Pioneer History and Historical Perspectives

The Rae House Museum was built in 1863 by pioneer John Rae and is located at 204 Oak Avenue in Galt. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit.

St. Luke's Episcopal Church is one of Galt's original pioneer churches. The church's Christmas Bazaar takes place every year on the first weekend in December. If you want to use the date for a December stay, check the date for the relevant year.

The McFarland Living History Ranch was created in 1998 as a living history project in which children experienced pioneer life on a farm around the turn of the 20th century. Its perspective focuses on everyday history: farm life and the period around 1900. This topic complements the history of an individual historic building and a pioneer church with a glimpse into a way of life.

Biodiversity at the Cosumnes River Preserve

The Cosumnes River Preserve protects one of California's last remaining undammed rivers, along with its associated wetlands, oak riparian forests, grasslands, and side channels. It is home to more than 250 bird species, over 40 fish species, and more than 230 plant species. These figures group the biodiversity into three categories: birds, fish, and plants, making the botanical diversity just as visible as the wildlife.
