Local history at the museum and in the Village

The permanent exhibition at the Fair Oaks History Center traces the history of Fair Oaks from its founding in 1895 through the Aerojet era of the 1950s and 1960s. This timeline spans the founding period and a much later era. Museum exhibits include early artifacts of the Indigenous Maidu, as well as historical artifacts from Fair Oaks homes and businesses. Alongside an overview spanning several decades, visitors can see specific objects from different areas of local history. You can explore both the town’s development over time and individual items in the collection.

If you prefer to explore local history through buildings rather than exhibits, there is another option: The Fair Oaks History Center offers a free brochure and map for a walking tour of notable historic buildings in the Village district. The Fair Oaks Walking Tour is divided into four sections. The exhibition and the walking tour have different focuses—one covers the historical timeline and collection, while the other features buildings in the Village. If you are especially interested in historic architecture, the walking tour provides a specific place to start.

Historic buildings and their context

The historic Old Fair Oaks Bridge is located in Upper Sunrise. It is an outstanding example of truss bridge construction and engineering. It is also the second-oldest of the ten Pennsylvania Petit bridges still standing in California. Its architectural significance and age ranking offer two specific ways to understand the same structure. For anyone interested in architecture and engineering, the bridge can be considered not only as a landmark in its own right, but also in comparison with others in this group.

Slocum House offers a different historical point of reference: it was completed in 1924 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. These dates mark separate milestones—the completion of the house and its later addition to the register. Its construction history and historic designation are therefore distinct.

Horticulture and seasonal nature

The Fair Oaks Horticulture Center is an educational facility for home gardeners and landscape professionals. It holds open garden days and demonstrations. Its focus is therefore distinct from that of the History Center’s exhibitions: here, the emphasis is on horticultural education. If you are planning to attend a particular garden day or demonstration, check the event dates in advance.

Phoenix Park includes a bike park and a natural area with seasonal vernal pools. These offer different points of interest: the bike park is focused on cycling, while the natural area features a seasonal natural attraction. The seasonal nature of the vernal pools is part of their description and should be considered when planning a visit. Phoenix Dog Park offers a separate focus. It has designated areas where large and small dogs can run and play; the division by dog size is a specific feature of the facility.

This gives you a concrete starting point for deciding what you want your stay to focus on.
