Nearly two miles of coastline and a pier extending 1,140 feet toward the Pacific give Hermosa Beach a strong connection to the sea. At the same time, the town is more than just a place for beach days: surf history, a museum, a theater, and Fiesta Hermosa complement the outdoor activities. When choosing a base for your trip, it’s helpful to first decide whether you’re mainly planning for the beach and outdoor activities or also want to include cultural offerings and events.

Pacific Coast, Beach, and Pier

Hermosa Beach’s coastline spans nearly two miles, and its public beach covers 94 acres. Together, the length of the coastline and the beach area define the setting for a stay by the sea.

The Hermosa Beach Pier extends 1,140 feet from The Strand toward the Pacific. The current pier structure dates to 1965. The pier is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; weather or other conditions may cause temporary closures. Check current hours and notices before your visit, especially if the pier is a set part of your itinerary.

The Strand is part of the 22-mile Marvin Braude Bike Trail, which runs from Torrance County Beach to Pacific Palisades. This offers a different point of reference from the pier: here, the focus is on a section of a longer bike trail, while the pier is a single structure.

Outdoor Activities and Beach Use

Surfing is one of the defining outdoor activities in Hermosa Beach culture. Hermosa Beach has 71 permitted beach volleyball courts. The number may change; check current court information if you’re planning a game. All beach volleyball courts on the beach are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Beach tennis courts are on the beach north of the pier, between 10th and 15th Streets. Outside of reserved activities, they are also available on a first-come, first-served basis. The stated exception is therefore different for each: reserved activities are excluded for beach tennis, while the first-come, first-served rule applies to all beach volleyball courts on the beach. Since reservation rules may change, it’s worth checking the current usage information before making specific plans.

Surf History and Culture

Established in 2003, the Surfer’s Walk of Fame honors individuals and groups each year for their contributions to surfing in Hermosa Beach. Surf history is thus not only part of the outdoor offerings but also part of the town’s cultural identity.

The Hermosa Beach Museum offers a different perspective on local culture. Its collections include works of art, books, ephemera, photographs, and material culture. The museum also offers student tours, educational talks, and changing special exhibitions.

The Hermosa Beach Community Theatre is a 502-seat theater for youth musical theater, film premieres, dance productions, performances, and other events. The museum and theater therefore appeal to different cultural interests: collections and exhibitions on one hand, and stage events on the other.

Fiesta Hermosa and Travel Planning

Fiesta Hermosa is a community tradition that has welcomed Southern California residents to Hermosa Beach for more than 50 years. The event features four stages with live entertainment, as well as a Food Fair and a Dessert Depot. The program and food offerings may vary from one edition to another. If you’d like to include the festival in your plans, check the dates and program for your travel period.

BCT Line 109 connects Riviera Village, Hermosa, Manhattan, El Segundo, Green Line stations, and the LAX Bus Center. Since route details may change, check the current route and schedule when planning your trip. This lets you factor the connection into your plans and decide whether the beach, sports, culture, or a festival will be the main focus of your stay.
