Westlake Village lies in the northern foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains, with the Simi Hills bordering it to the north and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south. Local highlights include Community Park, named trails, golf, and Chumash history. Visitors planning a stay will find different conditions to consider: daily park hours, seasonal natural features, and events whose details may change from year to year.

Park, Trails, and Landscape

Westlake Village Community Park covers 18 acres and is open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit. Westlake Village Skate Park is located within the park and is open daily from dawn to dusk. The two time frames differ: Community Park is open from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., while Skate Park’s hours are limited to daylight. So if Skate Park is your specific destination, be sure to check its own opening hours.

The Wishbone Trail is located above Westlake Village Community Park and is managed by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. In the wider rural Agoura-Westlake area, Triunfo Creek Park features dense oak woodland, native grasslands, and wildflowers that bloom in spring. The Pentachaeta Trail in Triunfo Creek Park is named after Pentachaeta lyonii, a flower found there that is federally listed as endangered. The area’s natural features are thus linked with a specific conservation concern.

Annual Events and Golf

The annual 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular takes place at Westlake Golf Course and features food, music, and activities for the whole family. The annual 4th of July Parade invites people to walk or ride bicycles along the route and ends with a festival at Berniece Bennett Park. Another annual community event is the City Celebration at the City of Westlake Village Civic Center. The three events differ in format and venue. If you plan to time your stay around one of these dates, check the details for the relevant year, as they may change.

Westlake Golf Course has a lighted driving range with 40 hitting stations. Tee times can be booked up to one week in advance for groups of at least two players; check the booking requirements before your visit. The golf course was built by architect Ted Robinson in 1967. This gives visitors a specific facility and booking rule to consider, along with the course’s historical connection.

Chumash History, Library, and Fishing

A Chumash village is believed to have stood at the site of present-day Westlake Village. Ongoing excavations, archaeological sites, and polychrome rock paintings in the surrounding area offer insight into the social and economic complexity of the ancient Chumash world. The presumed settlement site at present-day Westlake Village and the evidence found in the surrounding area are distinct geographic aspects of this history.

Westlake Village Library opened in February 2002 and covers 10,250 square feet. It has study rooms and electronic workstations, as well as a bookstore run by the Friends of the Westlake Village Library.

A current WLMA fishing permit is required to fish at private Westlake Lake; only people who can show one are allowed to fish there. Check the permit requirements before planning a fishing trip.
