Fountain Hills brings together Fountain Park in the town center, a network of trails with varying levels of difficulty, public art, and opportunities for stargazing. This lets you plan your stay around your interests: a short, clearly timed visit to the fountain, a hike in the preserve, or cultural stops in town. The night sky and seasonal events also play a role in choosing when to travel.

Park and Fountain

Fountain Park is a 64-acre area in the town center and is intended for passive recreation. Its fountain operates for 15 minutes every hour between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. It remains off in windy conditions. The show is therefore a short, clearly timed part of a park visit, not a continuous attraction. If you want to see the fountain, take its hourly schedule and the wind conditions into account when planning your visit.

Trails in the Preserve

Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve covers 824 acres and has 12 miles of trails with varying levels of difficulty. The trail network offers options for different abilities. Visitors can drive directly to the Adero Canyon Trailhead entrance via a paved road. Access conditions may change, so check them before your hike.

Art and Culture in Town

Fountain Hills has a public art collection of 150 works. The Centennial Circle Art Walk takes you through the Centennial Circle sculpture garden. The Avenue of the Fountains Tour has a different focus: it leads to the plaza on Avenue of the Fountains, where you can see the artwork Freedom, featuring an eagle. The two tours thus offer different experiences—sculptures in a garden or a specific artwork in the plaza.

Cultural offerings also include the River of Time Museum, with its changing exhibition gallery and River Bank Gift Store, as well as the Fountain Hills Theater. It presents plays and musicals for family entertainment. Fountain Hills Botanical Garden was established in 1975 as a wildlife sanctuary and garden.

Stargazing and Seasonal Events

Fountain Hills received its Dark Sky designation from DarkSky International in 2018. For stargazing, consider the east side of Fountain Park and other city parks, provided the sports field floodlights are off. Lighting is therefore an important factor when choosing a viewing spot: check in advance whether the field lights could affect your plans.

The town center hosts an annual Dark Sky Festival featuring astronauts, educational speakers, live music, and local food vendors. Dates and program details may change. From November through April, weekly Wednesday markets in the town center bring together local business owners, Arizona artisans, chefs, and bakers; dates and schedules may also vary. If either event is important to your trip, check the relevant dates and program information.
