Delta Junction is considered the official end of the Alaska Highway; here, the highway meets the Richardson Highway. At the intersection, an oversized white milepost marks mile 1422 of the Alaska Highway. This landmark is known as the Triangle. If you want to shape your stay around the route and its history, the town offers a clear thematic anchor: the highway junction and historic roadhouses sit alongside trails and nature watching as distinct points of interest.

Roadhouses and Travel History

The Sullivan Roadhouse was built in 1905 and served travelers on the Fairbanks-Valdez Trail until 1927. The Sullivan Roadhouse Museum displays historical photographs and excavated artifacts in several exhibits about Alaska’s roadhouse era in the early 20th century. This brings together the history of a travel route and tangible insights into life in Alaska at the time, without limiting the exhibits to a single object.

Another historic site is in nearby Big Delta State Historical Park, eight miles north of Delta Junction. There stands Rika's Roadhouse, a log cabin on the historic Valdez-to-Fairbanks Trail that served travelers from 1913 to 1947. The two roadhouses thus offer different points in time in the history of travelers on the historic trails.

Forest Trails and Seasonal Activities

The Liewer Community Trail runs through about 10 acres of mature spruce and birch forest in downtown Delta Junction. The trail is designed for classic cross-country skiing; in snow-free months, it attracts walkers, runners and birdwatchers. If you’re choosing activities based on when you travel, this comparison is useful: the same trail has different main uses depending on the season.

Delta River Walk Park features wooded trails and paths for river viewing. From there, you can enjoy views of the Delta River and the Alaska Range. This lets you combine a walk with watching the river and taking in the mountain views mentioned here. Nearby Clearwater State Recreation Site offers a different nature experience: a nature trail runs along the river, where you can observe local wildlife and plant life up close.

Nature and Camping

Delta Junction is home to the 90,000-acre Delta Bison Sanctuary. It was established for a free-roaming herd of more than 500 animals. The sanctuary’s size and purpose give the topic of wildlife a different dimension from nature watching on a nature trail.

If you’re considering camping instead of staying overnight at a hotel, Delta State Recreation Site has 25 developed campsites, a covered picnic pavilion, water and restrooms. This gives you an explicitly camping-focused option to consider when choosing where to stay.

Markets and Seasonal Events

The Highway's End Farmer's Market is across from the visitor center at the Triangle. Vendors sell fresh vegetables, jams, jellies and baked goods, as well as local bison, caribou and moose meat. If local food is among your travel interests, the market offers a tangible connection to local production.

The season also matters when it comes to events. The Deltana Fair takes place in midsummer and features livestock, produce and arts and crafts exhibits, live music, tractor contests, food stands and carnival attractions. The annual Delta Junction Fall Festival runs from Friday through Sunday and offers activities for the whole family. Vendors, food trucks and pumpkins are also part of the festival. If one of the festivals determines your travel dates, check the exact event days before your trip.

This gives you a clear set of choices as you plan: the historic roadhouses and marked highway junction offer a different focus from forest trails, nature watching or seasonal events. Consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip, and choose your stay in conjunction with the season that best suits it.
