In Denali National Park and Preserve, most of the only road is open exclusively to buses in summer—from May 20 to mid-September. This seasonal rule makes how you get around a concrete part of planning your trip. If you’re visiting during this period, factor the bus schedule into your plans.
Keep routes and access in mind
The George Parks Highway connects Anchorage and Fairbanks through spectacular wilderness in the heart of Alaska and provides access to Denali National Park and Preserve. In Denali State Park, the same highway divides the area roughly in half. This park offers recreational opportunities ranging from roadside camping to wilderness exploration. Its landscape changes from meandering lowland streams to alpine tundra.
Access to Kachemak Bay State Park is different: it can’t be reached by road. Visitors get there by boat or plane, including charter flights or a water taxi from Homer. Caines Head State Recreation Area can also be reached from Seward on foot or by boat. These differences are helpful when comparing experiences and routes as you plan your trip.
Caines Head State Recreation Area is located at the site of an abandoned World War II fort. Its coastal trail runs 4.5 miles from Lowell Point to North Beach. When planning this route, consider both the tides and trail conditions, as both can change.
Hiking trails and historic routes
Chugach State Park has more than 280 miles of hiking trails. Comparing specific one-way distances shows the range: the challenging Flattop Mountain Trail starts at the Glen Alps Trailhead and is 1.5 miles one way. The Historic Iditarod (Crow Pass) Trail is 23.2 miles one way and follows a historic Iditarod supply route. The Iditarod Trail is designated a National Historic Trail.
Cycling is permitted on designated trails in Chugach State Park, subject to park regulations. Alaska State Parks hiking guides include information about trail access, difficulty, length and permitted uses. Because trail conditions can change and guide availability may also vary, it’s worth checking both before your trip.
Kachemak Bay State Park’s landscape spans approximately 400,000 acres, from mountains and glaciers to forests and sea. Visitors can kayak there. Above the tree line, skiers will find glaciers and snowfields stretching for many miles. These activities offer different ways to experience the same landscape: water, forest, alpine heights and snow.
Wilderness, wildlife viewing and culture
Visitors to Kachemak Bay State Park often see sea otters, seals, porpoises and whales. Across Alaska, habitats range from boreal forests and Arctic tundra to glacier fjords and coastal rainforests. Guided wildlife-viewing tours in the state include bear, whale and bird watching. These offerings cover different wildlife-viewing interests, but no single tour includes them all.
Experiences on the water also vary: in Glacier Bay, kayak tours can start in Bartlett Cove; guided day and overnight tours are available. The two formats give you different time frames to plan around. Another public facility connected to the sea is the Alaska SeaLife Center, which combines a public aquarium with marine research, education and wildlife care.
Alaska’s cultural diversity is also reflected in the numbers: the state has 20 distinct Alaska Native cultures, 229 federally recognized tribes and 300 different dialects. Visitors can explore stories passed down by Elders and experience traditional dances. Alaska’s seafood includes salmon, crab and cod.
The Alaska State Museums offer the public access to museum services and collections. The Alaska State Museum was founded on June 6, 1900; the Sheldon Jackson Museum manages a collection of 6,000 objects. For travel planning, Alaska is divided into five distinct regions, and it also offers a variety of routes and forms of transportation. So when choosing a base, consider the specific experiences you want and how to reach each one.
