Between mid-October and January, more than 3,000 eagles gather at the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. This seasonal natural spectacle is a distinctive starting point for discovering Haines Borough: alongside its wildlife, you can learn about Tlingit heritage and regional history, explore trails through rainforest landscapes, and experience community life.

Wildlife Through the Seasons

The changing seasons also shape nature at Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site. The area has four salmon runs from mid-June to mid-October. Because salmon spawn in the river and at this end of the lake, the area is also known as “Bear Highway.” Bear-viewing opportunities elsewhere in the Haines area are separate from this: they are available in mid- to late summer. Eagles, by contrast, gather between mid-October and January. If you choose your travel dates based on wildlife, you’ll find different seasonal windows here.

The American Bald Eagle Foundation offers another opportunity to see birds of prey. It houses live raptors and more than 200 museum specimens; visitors can explore its aviary and museum exhibits. Visiting opportunities may change, so check the Foundation’s latest information before your trip.

Tlingit Heritage and History

The Haines Sheldon Museum presents Tlingit heritage and the evolution of Jilkáat Aani, a Tlingit stronghold, into a multiethnic community. It also preserves more than 4,000 artifacts, including Chilkat blankets and the Eldred Rock lighthouse lens. The collection brings together cultural records and examples that reveal different aspects of Chilkat Valley history.

Fort William H. Seward offers another perspective on the region’s history. The fort is a National Historic Landmark and is associated with the U.S. military presence during border disputes with Canada. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on June 2, 1978.

The Hammer Museum has seasonal visiting hours: it welcomes visitors daily from mid-May to mid-September, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and also opens for evening cruise ships. Check the current hours before visiting. This makes it easier to fit a museum visit in with the other cultural and nature-focused parts of your trip.

Trails of Varying Lengths

Trails around Haines vary in length and scenery. The easy Battery Point Trail is 1.2 miles long, passes through rainforest, and ends at a rocky beach. At 6.8 miles, the Ayiklutu Trail is considerably longer; it winds through rainforests and along beaches on Chilkat Inlet. These route details give you a concrete way to compare their lengths without setting a fixed schedule.

Summit elevations offer another point of comparison: the Mount Riley Trail leads to a 1,760-foot summit and has three trailheads. The Mount Ripinsky Trail leads to the 3,920-foot North Summit and offers views of Lynn Canal. When comparing trails, you can consider the listed elevations as well as the scenery and lengths.

Two other locations offer their own viewpoints, without a route description being the main focus. The Chilkat State Park contact and information center offers views of Chilkat Inlet, Rainbow Glacier, and Davidson Glacier. From Portage Cove State Recreation Site, views extend across Chilkoot Inlet and the surrounding mountains.

Local Life and Getting There

The Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds is a 42-acre, year-round center for community recreation in Haines. The Southeast Alaska State Fair is a four-day fair held in late July and hosts the Haines Fishermen’s Free Salmon BBQ. The Haines Farmers Market offers locally grown or made produce, food, art, and crafts. Together, these offerings showcase different facets of community life, from the market to the fair.

Haines is accessible by road, air, and water; roads connect the town to Canada and the Alaska Highway. The Port Chilkoot Cruise Ship Dock is directly in front of Fort William H. Seward and less than half a mile from downtown Haines. Check the latest dock arrangements before your trip. Haines also offers guided tours by land, water, and air. If a particular tour is important to your plans, ask about current offerings in advance.
