Mckinley Park is next to the entrance to Denali National Park, one of Alaska’s most visited parks. There are several ways to explore the area, including ranger programs and exhibits, trails through boreal forest, and excursions such as fishing trips. There is also more than one way to get there.

Getting There and Location

Mckinley Park is accessible via the George Parks Highway. The Alaska Railroad also serves Denali Park; its schedules vary by season. If you plan to travel by train, check the schedule for your travel dates. The location next to the park entrance and the two travel options mentioned here provide a starting point for planning, but do not imply a specific itinerary.

Ranger Programs and Visitor Centers

At the Denali Visitor Center, you can talk with park rangers, watch the film “Heartbeats of Denali,” and explore an exhibit area. The program may vary. From June to mid-September, ranger-led walks are offered in Denali every year. One such walk starts at the Denali Visitor Center; no registration is required. It is rated easy to moderate and can cover up to 1.5 miles round trip. Check the schedule before your visit if you plan to join a guided walk.

At the Murie Science and Learning Center, visitors can watch park films, explore a small exhibit area, borrow snowshoes for the trails, and pick up a Junior Ranger activity booklet. Offerings may vary by season. The two centers offer different points of interest: the Visitor Center features, among other things, conversations with rangers and a film, while snowshoes and an activity booklet are also among the offerings at the Murie Center.

Trails with Different Route Types

Most hiking trails in Denali are accessible from the Denali Visitor Center. Weather, maintenance, and seasonal closures may affect access. Near the entrance to Denali National Park, the Horseshoe Lake Trail is a 2.8-mile loop through boreal forest to a scenic lake. Also near the entrance is the Mt. Healy Overlook Trail: the 2.7-mile out-and-back route climbs partway up Mt. Healy.

The distances are similar, but the route types differ: the Horseshoe Lake Trail is a loop, while the Mt. Healy Overlook Trail is an out-and-back route that climbs partway up. These details allow for a direct comparison without treating the trails as the same type of hike. Conditions and access for both may change depending on the season.

More Experiences and Planning Your Stay

At the Denali National Park Sled Dog Kennels, visitors can meet the sled dog team. Denali National Park has the only sled dog team in the United States used to patrol a national park. Tour operators also offer a variety of day trips from Denali Park, including fishing trips; offerings may change by season.

Ranger walks take place annually from June to mid-September, train schedules vary seasonally, and tour operator offerings may also change. Check dates, schedules, and tour options for your travel dates before coordinating overnight stays and activities.
