In Conecuh County, water-based experiences sit alongside natural landscapes, Evergreen’s history, and local festival traditions. The Sepulga River Canoe Trail makes the river a tangible focus for an outing; Evergreen’s commercial history and events offer other highlights.

On the Sepulga River: Paddling and Sandbars

The Sepulga River Canoe Trail offers a wilderness experience for kayaking and canoeing. Its described features include deep water, limestone walls, and a few rapids. The trail also includes calm waters and several sandbars suitable for camping, fishing, and picnicking. You can experience different aspects of the river here: the paddling as well as the use of the sandbars for various activities.

In the southeastern part of the county, the Bull Slough Bridge crosses the Sepulga River and is part of the Canoe Trail. There are five different boat landings providing access to the river in Conecuh County. Another fishing option is the 20-acre County Lake, with public fishing areas. If you’re interested in hunting, opportunities to hunt white-tailed deer are available in the county during hunting season.

Hills, Trails, and Seasonal Nature Watching

The terrain at Boggs & Boulders features natural red, sandy, and rocky hills, steep rock cliffs, and black silt flats. Cool Pool is fed by a natural mineral spring in a rocky mountain. These features give the area a different character from the river landscapes.

Sportsman Lake Park has hiking trails and a wildflower garden. Since individual conditions on site can change, check them before visiting. Town Creek Marsh is a seasonal observation spot where rails can be seen foraging on mudflats. Unlike Sportsman Lake Park, with its trails and garden, the focus here is on observing birds according to the season.

Evergreen: Commercial History and Historic Sites

Evergreen’s beginnings trace back to a village founded around 1819. The town’s railroad connection was completed in April 1861; Evergreen is located along the former L&N Railroad and US Highways 31 and 84. The town’s commercial history also shapes its past: the New Evergreen Commercial Historic District is significant for its commercial history. Evergreen’s historic industry included shipping periwinkle and Smilax through Caldwell, the Woodsman Company.

The Old Paul Post Office served the community as a post office until 1975 and was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 2013. The Louisville and Nashville Depot is in Evergreen, at the southwestern end of Front Street in Conecuh County, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This listing refers to the Louisville and Nashville Depot.

The Old Airport Tower and Beacon is west of Evergreen. It was built in 1931 as part of the U.S. airmail service between New Orleans and Atlanta and served as a U.S. Navy training site during World War II. Booker's Mill, meanwhile, was built in the late 1860s, supplied water power to the surrounding community for many years, and burned down in 1982.

Local Food and Recurring Festivals

Conecuh Sausage began in 1947 as a family-run business in Evergreen. To this day, the company continues the tradition of smoking sausage over a pure hickory wood fire. The Conecuh Sausage gift shop in Evergreen offers branded products, specialty gifts, home décor, and hunting accessories.

Evergreen’s annual events include the Sausage Festival on the third Saturday in October and the Collard Green Festival on the first Saturday in March. Both take place at Middleton Field Airport; the Sausage Festival is held in conjunction with the South East Regional Fly-In. Evergreen also hosts an annual Fall Festival and Christmas parade. Their dates may vary. Check the current event dates before your trip.
