Fossil Hunting and Nature

In Aliceville, visitors can search for shark teeth and fossils at Shark Tooth Creek. The Shark Tooth Creek Express takes them to the creek by hay wagon, where they spend about an hour and a half searching for fossils. Check the arrangements for this experience before your trip.

Aliceville Reservoir is an 8,300-acre reservoir in Pickens County, formed by the Tom Bevill Lock and Dam. It is known for fishing for largemouth bass and crappie.

On the south shore of Aliceville Lake lies the Pickensville Recreation Area, a wooded, elongated park. Bald eagles can be observed there year-round, while ospreys hunt for fish mainly during the warmer seasons. The observations therefore also vary by season: bald eagles are reported throughout the year, while osprey hunting is especially associated with the warmer seasons.

Museum History and Local Traditions

At the Aliceville Museum, the main exhibit presents artifacts from Aliceville Prisoner of War Camp, which operated from 1942 to 1945. Alongside it, the local history collection traces Aliceville’s history from its founding in 1902 to the present. Historical maps, photographs, antique household items and vintage clothing show the range of objects collected. The museum thus brings together the history of the camp and a broader history of the town.

Another distinctive feature is the Coca-Cola exhibit: it preserves the complete, intact bottling equipment installed when the building was constructed. Together with the maps, photographs and everyday objects, it offers a different perspective on the collection than the main exhibit about the years of the prisoner-of-war camp.

Historical points of interest can also be found outside the museum collections. Gordo Old Jail, also called Gordo Jail and Mayor’s Office, was built in 1914 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 17, 1974. These two dates clearly mark the building’s construction and its listing. The construction year, 1914, and the listing year, 1974, are 60 years apart.

At the Pickens County Courthouse in Carrollton, Alabama, there is a window with a ghostly image believed to be the face of Henry Wells.

The Tom Bevill Lock and Dam Visitors Center is designed as an authentic replica of a mid-19th-century plantation house. The Tom Bevill Visitor Center has picnic tables and restrooms, and the center is accessible. Check these details before your visit.
