Spanish Fort sits on a hill overlooking Mobile Bay. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on the history of the fortifications or the landscape of wetlands, water, and trails. This lets you tailor your stay more toward cultural history or nature and water activities.
From Trading Post to Civil War History
The local history first leads to a French trading post, established during the French occupation of Mobile. Spanish Fort was originally its location. After Spain captured Mobile in 1780, a Spanish military fort was built on the site of the former trading post. This sequence distinguishes the early trading post from the later Spanish fortification.
Another key historical turning point was the siege of Spanish Fort, which lasted from March 27 to April 8, 1865. On that day, Union troops captured the fort. Fort McDermott is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks & Heritage because of its connection to military history and archaeology.
The site of Alabama’s largest Civil War battle is located in Historic Blakeley State Park. This highlights different aspects of history: the siege of Spanish Fort on the one hand and the preserved site of this battle in the park on the other.
Wetlands, Delta, and Water Activities
Meaher State Park is a 1,327-acre park in the wetlands of northern Mobile Bay. A self-guided walk on the boardwalk offers an up-close view of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. For a visit focused on the landscape, this experience combines a walk with a close-up view of the delta.
The park includes a 300-foot fishing pier with a 200-foot T-shaped section. There is also a boat ramp, paddle launches, and kayak and canoe rentals. Fees and operating details can change; check them before your visit, especially if you plan to use the rentals or the ramp.
The 5 Rivers facility also offers educational programs and access to the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Boat tours depart from the docks at 5 Rivers Bartram Landing. They are offered by 5 Rivers together with Historic Blakeley State Park. Reservations are required in advance for these tours.
Trails with Different Focuses
The Eastern Shore Trail runs for 22 miles along Mobile Bay from Spanish Fort to Weeks Bay. Historic Blakeley State Park has more than 20 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails. The details offer different guidance: for the Eastern Shore Trail, the route between two places is specified; in Blakeley, several types of trail activities are listed. Which option you choose therefore also depends on whether the route or the variety of trail activities is more important to you.
Another Place in Spanish Fort
The Kids Park, originally called The Fort, was renovated in 2018. Its features include ADA-accessible elements, auditory features, sensory-stimulating surfaces, swings, and slides. If you rely on specific features, check their current status before your visit, as offerings can change.
When looking for a hotel in Spanish Fort, it helps to set a clear priority: Should your stay focus primarily on fort history, the delta and water activities, or the trails? Then check the location of a specific accommodation in relation to the places you actually plan to visit.
