Nakhon Phanom lies on the western bank of the Mekong. Wat Phra That Tha Uthen stands near the river, opposite Pak Hin Pun in Laos, now called Mueang Hin Pun. The Mekong is a clear geographic reference point; stupas, cultural traditions, and nature experiences reveal other sides of the destination. Nakhon Phanom was once the center of the ancient Sri Kotrabun Kingdom.

Stupas, history, and culture

Wat Phra That Tha Uthen was built on January 30, 1911. The square stupa, made of brick and mortar, contains Buddha relics. Its form, materials, and function define the character of this structure. Another example is Phra That Nakhon at Wat Mahathat in Nakhon Phanom, which is distinguished by its intricate ornamentation. The two stupas therefore highlight different architectural features.

The region’s history can also be explored through specific places and traditions. Archaeological evidence suggests that Phra That Phanom was built around the 12th to 14th Buddhist centuries. The former residence of the governor of Nakhon Phanom is on Sunthon Wichit Road in Nai Mueang. It is registered as a historic monument and has been converted into a museum about the province’s history.

Cultural experiences include the Bai-Sri-Su-Kwan welcoming ceremony. Visitors can also see the Sri Kotrabun folk dance; some folk dances are performed only on special occasions. The Tai Kuan Cultural Center in Ban Na Thon offers talks on cultural exchange and a blacksmithing demonstration station. Indigo dyeing is maintained as a craft tradition in the Tai Nyaw Cultural Tourism Village in Ban Phon. These examples range from a ceremony and dance to cultural exchange and traditional crafts.

Nature trails, views, and waterfalls

Phu Langka National Park covers the districts of Ban Phaeng and Na Thom in Nakhon Phanom and also extends into Bueng Khong Long District in Bueng Kan Province. The natural area therefore extends beyond the provincial boundary. Nakee Cave is in Ban Phaeng, with rock formations reminiscent of snake scales and a snake’s head.

The trail to Nakee Cave first follows a stream for 1.5 kilometers along a paved path, then continues through the forest for 300 meters. Since trail conditions can change, check them before your visit.

Phra That Phu Langka, also known as Chedi Kong Khao Si Bun Nao, stands at the highest point of Phu Langka. From there, you can watch the sunrise, with views stretching as far as Laos. For those who would rather see waterfalls than a viewpoint, each offers different features: Tat Pho has four tiers; swimming is possible at the first tier, and the second drops 30 meters. Tat Kham also has four tiers; the lowest forms a pool suitable for swimming. Its shaded, rocky surroundings are ideal for resting. Water conditions at both waterfalls can vary seasonally.

Cycling and travel information

A government report published on March 23, 2025, describes a Sunday cycling event along the Mekong. The 11.5-kilometer cycling route runs from Phaya Sri Sattanagaraj Square to the camping area at Friendship Bridge 3. Check before traveling to see whether the event is still taking place. Nakhon Phanom also has an airport.
