Buriram in Thailand brings together volcanic landscapes, archaeological history, crane conservation and motorsport. This is especially clear at Phanom Rung Historical Park, which is located on an extinct volcano. Khao Kradong and Phu Angkhan also feature volcanic formations. Together, these places showcase different aspects of the province: a historic settlement area, visible crater landscapes and natural areas that play a special role for cranes.

Phanom Rung: Volcano and Settlement History

Phanom Rung Historical Park is located on an extinct volcano in Ta Pek, in Chaloem Phra Kiat District of Buri Ram Province. According to inscriptions and architectural remains, the area around the park had been an ancient settlement since the 15th Buddhist century. The site therefore combines a striking geological setting with a long history of settlement.

The annual tradition of ascending Phanom Rung takes place from April 2 to 4, or on the full moon day of the fifth lunar month. At this time, the first light of morning shines through all 15 gates. If you would like to include the tradition in your travel plans, check the dates in advance. Wat Angkhan is also associated with a local tradition that the Buddha’s ashes were enshrined on the mountain.

Crater Landscapes at Khao Kradong and Phu Angkhan

Khao Kradong Forest Park is a recreation area with an ancient volcano and a clearly visible crater. There are two ways to ascend Khao Kradong: climb a staircase with 297 steps or drive to the summit. Check current conditions before your visit. Phu Angkhan is a volcanic hill with one large crater and several smaller ones. The two volcanic features are distinct: a clearly visible crater at Khao Kradong and a group of craters at Phu Angkhan.

Observe Cranes and Explore Natural Areas

For bird enthusiasts, the Wetland and Thai Crane Learning Center offers a combination of information and observation. It has an exhibition room and information boards, and staff are available to answer questions. From a four-story observation tower, you can use binoculars to observe Thai cranes and other bird species. Check the current observation opportunities before your trip.

Huai Chorakhe Mak Reservoir is also part of the crane story: Thai sarus cranes were released there and reproduce naturally. The difference from observing cranes at the learning center is clear: the reservoir is a site for release and natural reproduction, while the tower is for observing cranes and other birds. This allows you to distinguish between two aspects of crane conservation without conflating them.

Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary is described as one of the last rich forests in Buri Ram Province and an important source area for the upper reaches of Lam Nang Rong and Lam Plai Mat. The focus here is different from that at the observation tower: forest and headwaters rather than direct birdwatching.

Motorsport in Buriram

Buriram International Circuit opened in 2014, and its first MotoGP race was held there in 2018. The opening and the first race mark two milestones in the circuit’s history.
