Dongshan is associated with several different travel interests: coffee and cafés along 175 Coffee Road, the hiking trail to Kantoushan, sandstone formations, temple traditions and bee culture. This gives you different ways to choose what interests you about the area. Would you like to learn about coffee growing and cafés, choose a trail with named rock formations, or discover a tradition and a hands-on activity? Each theme offers a distinct focus for planning your trip.

Coffee along 175 Coffee Road

175 Coffee Road extends beyond Dongshan District and is connected to Dongshan through coffee growing. Numerous cafés line the road, each with its own character. Some offer views, while others provide insights into coffee plants and coffee production. So the coffee experience involves more than visiting a café: you can focus on a café’s views and character, or take an interest in growing and production. The offerings therefore vary within the same themed route.

Hiking trail and rock formations at Kantoushan

A hiking trail from Dongshan Fuyou Temple leads to the summit of Kantoushan, at an elevation of 884 metres. Along the way, the trail passes Stone Toad and Lover's Rock. The elevation makes the summit destination specific, while the two rock names add distinctive landmarks to the route description. If you’re interested in both a summit and named rock formations on an outing, this trail offers a focus of its own.

Sandstone formations such as Xiandan Rock and Toad Rock can also be found around Kantoushan. These are distinct from Stone Toad and Lover's Rock in the description: the latter two are along the hiking trail, while Xiandan Rock and Toad Rock are formations in the area around the mountain. The names help distinguish the trail landmarks from other landscape features.

From the square in front of Fuyou Temple, the view stretches across the Jianan Plain and the upper Jishui River watershed. This adds a different landscape perspective to the rocks and summit: the plain and river basin shape the view. If you’d also like to consider viewpoints when choosing what to see in Dongshan, this is a specific view with named geographical features.

Temple traditions and bee culture

An annual procession tradition that has continued for more than a hundred years is maintained at Dongshan Bixuan Temple and is classified as an important national folk custom. This makes an ongoing tradition, rather than just a single attraction, the focus. If you’re particularly interested in religious customs and their cultural significance, this procession is a reason in its own right to consider Dongshan for your trip.

The Donghe Bee Culture Tourist Factory offers a different kind of experience. Visitors can take part in a simulated honey harvest and DIY activities. These include making a bee magnet out of modelling clay and a bee-puppet pen. Unlike the procession, this is a hands-on activity centered on bee culture. Check the Tourist Factory’s current opening hours before visiting.

Include dates in your plans

These two offerings differ in their timing: the procession follows an annual tradition, while the times for visitor activities at the Donghe Bee Culture Tourist Factory should be checked separately. If either one is a deciding factor for your trip, confirm the relevant date or time in advance. This lets you account for the different scheduling requirements of each experience.
