On the western shore of Lake Zurich, Thalwil lies on the slopes of the Zimmerberg. There are various ways to explore the town, depending on your interests: the lake and swimming spots, church history, the museum and historic objects, as well as green spaces and play areas. In the town centre, Gotthardstrasse has numerous shops selling everyday essentials, cafés, butcher shops and bakeries. You can tailor your stay to suit your interests, whether culture, swimming spots or nature.

Swimming spots and lakeside facilities

Ludretikon bathing area is free and unguarded, and invites you to swim in Lake Zurich. Follow local safety advice before swimming. There is a small playground, a table tennis table, a SUP station and a kiosk offering takeaway food. Five hardboards and two inflatable boards are available to rent for SUP. Facilities and rental inventory may change; check both before your visit, especially if renting is important to your plans.

BĂĽrger II lido is supervised by lifeguards. Check this seasonal visitor information for your planned visit. This gives the lido a different setting from the unguarded Ludretikon bathing area. An unstaffed lakeside facility in Thalwil has several sunbathing lawns, an electric grill and a fire pit; swimming there is at your own risk.

Church history and museum

Pfistergut, now the Thalwil Museum, was built by district judge Hans Jakob Syfrig-Wunderli. At the end of the 19th century, the building was altered, including the addition of an entrance porch in the Swiss timber style. According to the museum concept dated September 2023, the collection comprises around 6,000 objects. The building’s history and collection offer different perspectives on local cultural history.

A church in Thalwil was first mentioned in a document in 1159 as “tellowilare”, making it one of the oldest church buildings on the lake. The Reformed church on the Platte stands on a rocky outcrop and offers magnificent views of the lake.

The Thalwil Beautification Association documents 70 historic objects in Thalwil; its New Year’s publication can serve as a guide for a walking tour. The Former Thalwil Mill is another local cultural attraction: it is regularly put into operation for demonstrations. The municipality’s events calendar lists events in culture, sport and leisure. If you have a particular date in mind, check the calendar for the period of your stay.

Green spaces and play areas

Gattikerweiher is a hidden gem in the built-up area of Gattikon and invites visitors to linger. A park in Thalwil features a large lawn with benches, a pétanque court, and play and climbing equipment. The park offers wonderful views of the lake; the play area is suitable for children of preschool age and older.

A leisure and sports facility in Thalwil has a fire pit and a suspension bridge. Its play equipment includes impressive wooden animal sculptures; the playground is suitable for children of preschool age and older. Thalwil therefore offers various ways to spend time outdoors, from sunbathing lawns and green spaces to play equipment and views of the lake.
