Hirzel brings together local history, church art and landscape conservation, as well as two historic routes over the pass. You can choose the focus of your stay: the life and work of Johanna Spyri, the Baroque church, or the history of the routes between Lake Zurich and the Sihl Valley. Hirzel is a locality in the municipality of Horgen in the canton of Zurich. Its settlement history is documented from 1269, when property «in Hirsol» was first mentioned in a document.

The history of the pass and its routes

The summit of the Hirzel Pass lies within the municipality. The pass road is the shortest road connection between Wädenswil on Lake Zurich and Sihlbrugg in the Sihl Valley. It replaced the 600-year-old pack trail over the Hirzel Höhi. These details give the pass a clear historical dimension: today’s road connection stands alongside an older route used on foot and by pack animals.

The signposted «Saumweg» (pack trail) over Hirzel recalls the period from 1230 to 1830. At that time, muleteers travelled along the important trade route between Lake Zurich and Central Switzerland. If you are interested in this past, the trail provides a historical context for the trade that shaped the region. The «Passes: Hirzel» route follows an official hiking trail from Sihlbrugg to the Hirzel Höhi. It offers a specific hiking option without requiring you to commit to a walking time or distance. Signage and trail conditions can change; check the latest information before setting out.

Johanna Spyri and the museum

The Johanna Spyri Museum explores Johanna Spyri’s work beyond the Heidi novels. Her family history and social engagement are also among the exhibition topics. The museum’s visitor experience includes a tour of Johanna Spyri’s birthplace in Hirzel. Johanna Louise Heusser was born in Hirzel in 1827. This allows you to combine a museum visit with a look at her birthplace, rather than learning about the author solely through her best-known novels.

The exhibition offers several ways to explore Spyri: her literary work, family background and social engagement. The topic that interests you most can shape the focus of your visit. Exhibition content and the visitor experience may change; check the museum’s latest visitor information in advance.

Church art from different periods

Hirzel Church is a Baroque country church built around 400 years ago. One of its notable features is a pulpit richly decorated with inlay work, dating from 1617. Stained-glass windows from the workshop of the Taizé Community were added in 1971. These works let you see different periods represented in a single building: the pulpit dates to the early 17th century, while the windows reflect 20th-century design. If you are interested in architecture and furnishings, the church therefore offers more than a single historical point of reference.

Landscape and protected areas

The landscape is also a defining part of Hirzel. Horgenberg and Hirzel are included in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of Switzerland (BLN). Hirzel is also listed in the inventory of peatland landscapes and is part of the peatland landscapes of particular beauty. These classifications give landscape conservation a concrete role in describing the area, without treating the different protection designations as equivalent.

Another named place in this context is the Streuweid Nature Reserve. It is listed in the national inventory of fens in the canton of Zurich; its northern part is additionally listed in the national inventory of dry meadows and pastures. The distinction between the inventories and areas shows that the landscape cannot be captured by a single designation. Hirzel therefore offers clearly defined points of interest for choosing between cultural and landscape themes.
