Lufingen lies between the Glatt Valley and Töss Valley in the Zurich Unterland. In the historic village centre, the elevated Reformed church shapes the townscape; on the edge of the village, the cultural heritage ensemble known as the “castle” adds another distinctive feature. Together with the Gelsberg Castle site and the Schlossreben nature reserve, these places offer different perspectives on architecture, local history and landscape.

Church and Local History

The Reformed Church of Lufingen is distinguished by its Neoclassical nave and striking four-gabled tower. Fragments of wall paintings from the second half of the 15th century have been uncovered in the late medieval choir tower, including a depiction of the Madonna and Child. Different periods in art history thus come together in the same church building.

Lufingen was first mentioned in a document in 1157 under the name “Luvingener”. The mention was in connection with a donation of land to St. Blasien Abbey. Heinrich Brennwald was rector of Lufingen parish church from 1496 to 1498.

The cultural heritage ensemble on the edge of the village, known as the “castle”, comprises the Reformed rectory, a washhouse and a rectory well. The rectory was built in 1663 by Johann Heinrich Waser as the seat of the Lufingen court lordship, which existed until 1765. The building’s name alone does not tell the whole story of the ensemble: its individual parts and former use are also part of the picture.

Hiking Trails and Historic Traces

The Gelsberg Castle site lies on a wooded ridge southeast of and above the village. Its trapezoidal plateau is about 70 metres long and is protected on three sides by ditches. A marked hiking trail leads uphill from Lufingen along MĂĽlistrasse into the forest and onward to the castle site. As trail conditions can change locally, check route information before setting out.

For a longer perspective, the 70-kilometre Fryheitsweg 1525 trail passes through six villages, including Lufingen. Further explanations of the key term “key figures” are available here. The two trails therefore differ in scale: the marked hiking trail leads to a specific castle site, while the Fryheitsweg connects several villages. At the Pilgerecke in Lufingen church, a liturgical service can be held as part of the Fryheitsweg, with an optional symbolic act. Participation details may be subject to local arrangements.

Landscape, Nature and Golf

In 2018, agriculture accounted for 42.1 per cent of the municipality’s area and forest for 37.6 per cent. The Schlossreben nature reserve was managed as an extensive cultural landscape in 2023–2024; during this period, sand lizards and slow worms could be readily observed there. These figures also give a concrete impression of how agriculture, forest and protected landscapes shape the townscape.

Seasonal nature observations were also possible at Augwil Golf Course: in May and June 2023–2024, visitors could see blooming orchids and Siberian irises there. Golf Augwil has a 9-hole golf course and offers courses for beginners as well as taster golf days. Green-fee guests with memberships from Switzerland and abroad are welcome. Check dates and conditions in advance if you are planning a visit or to take part.

Group Experiences and Seasonal Events

The Schlachthuus brewery offers guided tastings of different beers and beer styles for groups of six or more. Groups of six to twelve can also combine a brewery tour with a beer tasting or a mini brewing seminar. Agree on the preferred date and combination for your group in advance.

The Paradise Christmas Market is a seasonal event. It takes place each year on the Saturday and Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent; more than 70 exhibitors present crafts, art and culinary specialities. The number of exhibitors may vary from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your stay around the market, check the dates for the relevant edition.
